selected case histories
1. CIC-10 Records Management Group, Los Alamos National
Laboratory-
I actually got into training through the route of data and records
management systems analysis and development. I had been working for a
specialized records management/document storage systems consultant that
supplied jukebox-type systems to engineering firms for drawing storage and
legal firms for huge amounts of data. I applied to LANL at a time when
there was a hiring freeze, but got instantly hired because my credentials
exactly matched a position needed in CIC-10, the records
management/document control group. LANL was facing an off-ramp records
finding, and we proceeded to develop a strategic plan and new systems for
all document types including classified and weapons drawings, and got
approval through DOE ABQ.
Complete makeover of group operations procedures and systems, in response
to an off-ramp contract requirement to upgrade records and storage.
Complete makeover of procedures, plan-of-the-day policies, vault storage,
secure mailing, and implementation of first web site for access to
information and documents. Served as special assistant for the group lead
and project leads. Strategic plan and plan of action successfully approved
by regional DOE office.
2. TA-50 Radioactive Liquid Waste Treatment Plant Readiness
Assessment and Upgrade to Cat II nuclear facility, Los
Alamos National Laboratory-
I then was asked to go to the Radioactive Liquid Waste treatment plant and
work with the engineers and operators, since they had completely replaced
all the RLW treatment systems, including lab chemistry and rad protection,
and were facing a major Readiness Review that turned out to be Cat 2. We
started with a program to completely redo the as-builts, which were out of
date and mostly in a dated software format, into a new CAD software and
storage system. This was the first time I worked with Beverly Ramsey and a
bit later Dennis McLain, and we proceeded to develop systems design
descriptions, complete configuration management, procedures, operations
manuals, maintenance and calibration manuals, training and qualification
programs, and all the administrative procedures that go along with this,
particularly document control and records management, for which I served as
SME.
Next, I was on special teams for the implementation of a couple of document
control and records softwares. The first was a manufacturing-control
software custom-designed for the RLW system that involved planning and
managing a huge support database of systems info, procedures, and
engineering info, then producing graphical-interface flow diagrams of the
processes and systems. The next was the implementation with TA-55 of the
Documentum records system, including database design and administrative
procedures. All this time, I was on the document control/records management
team for Waste Facilities (which, interestingly, was part of Facility
Engineering) and became the site-wide SME on a new document control
procedure.
I was there at RLW almost 10 years, with almost a year out to help Bev
manage the big fire recovery in 2000, including procedures, records
systems, environmental studies and impact statements, and a lot of planning
for future fire.
3. Waste Facilities Operations NQA-1 Quality
Implementation, Los Alamos National Laboratory-
Upgrade to NQA-1 standard involving procurement, procedures, worker
qualification and
