Mott MacDonald – Bridge Engineer
Projects listed below are part of a greater scheme called Northern Hub. The £530m
Northern Hub programme is to transform rail travel in the North of England facilitating
economic growth through faster, more frequent and reliable services between the major
cities in the North.
Journey Time Improvement Scheme (JTI) - Responsible for managing of team of
three graduates, coordination of retrieving and critical review of Network Rail asset
information (e.g. bridges, retaining walls, culvert, tunnels). Development of the
GRIP3 stage risk and cost-benefit profiles for the improvement of train journey
times. Further development of the chosen profiles after option selection stage.
Dore and Grindleford Capacity - Outline design of bridge reconstruction over railway
line. Producing a construction sequence drawings for different options.
Chinley Capacity - Derailment assessments/checks for current and proposed track
alignment in accordance with UIC 777 – 2R second edition 2002.
11.2010 – 02.2012
A-one+ – Bridge Engineer
The design of foundation for two 6.6m x 7.9m motorway signs including base plates
to support posts and holding down bolts.
Replacement of substandard parapets and safety fence transitions on the
northbound carriageway of the M53 Motorway. Involved in design process and
respond to TQs from construction site.
Took part in design and check of structural assessments of bridges/cantilevers for
the new CSB barrier and vehicle impact loading to IAN 97/07 and BD21/01.
Produced documentation required by HA during design process and finely assisted in
responding to TQs from construction site.
Various bridge re-waterproofing schems: M6 Hole House Br; M53 Upper Mersey
Street and Moreton East Brs; A56 Ewood Railway Br; M56 Wood Lane Br; M62 Moss
Cottage and Winton Main Brs. I produced a two stage feasibility report (including
Traffic Management options) and Design Risk Assessment for each of these
structures for determining the best solution for carrying out the proposed
re-waterproofing and joint replacement.
10.2007 – 11.2010
Halcrow Group Ltd – Bridge Engineer
Principal inspections and structural assessments of over 20 bridges of various types
including: steel beam, prestressed beam, concrete and stone masonry bridges.
Design of two concepts of a Baguley Heavy Rail Crossing including costs estimating.
Nile Basin Irrigation Scheme. Initial structural design of reinforced concrete retaining
walls for various heights (up to 6m) and ground conditions.
Parapet assessment for bridges in Area 10. Various packages involving nearly 30
bridge assessments. Structural assessments of bridge parapets, supporting
elements for vehicle collision effects according to BD44/95, IAN97/07 and to
BD48/93.
Feasibility study of seven bridges to identify and address the rehabilitation issues
with the structures and to undertake pier impact and parapet assessments.
Assessment of bridge supports and parapets carried out to IAN 91/07 and IAN
97/01 respectively in order to determine the need for upgrading, streng thening or
protection.
Night-time inspections of 2500m long runway. Defects recorded on drawings and
photographically with reference information. Assistedwith defect and repair
identification, prioritisation and repair type advising.
Cat III checks of reinforced or prestressed elements for three bridges of various
lengths: Cambuslang Rd Br. - 104m long; Farmeloan Rd Br - 58m long integral br.
and Glasgow Rd Br - 86m long. The structures were checked utilising a mixture of
hand and spreadsheet calculations, computer modelling and analysis (SAM Leap,
Superstress). During check works
I closely liaised with geotechnical engineers to produce methodology for calculations
of embedded piles under cyclic thermal expansion/contraction loads.
Cat I checks on reinforced concrete retaining walls for approximately 670m of flood
defence wall. Detailed design of some sections of the defence walls for approx 300m
of the scheme.
