AREAS OF INTEREST:

5

My research interest and background were based in the molecular

mechanisms and rearrangements in the DNA of bacterial mutants

or tumor cell lines when compared to the wild-type or normal cell.

This research had involved the use of standard molecular

biological tools including restriction enzyme mapping, Southern

hybridization, polymerase chain reactions and pulse field

electrophoresis.

I am co-author of a study examining the molecular genetics of a case of

familial myelodysplastic syndrome based at Dalhousie University,

Halifax, Nova Scotia. I have also participated in several other

studies presented at scientific meetings dealing with the role of

activated protein C resistance in the etiology of thrombotic events

in cancer, treatment of recurrent small cell lung cancer and the

aforementioned study of familial myelodysplastic syndrome (see

Abstracts and Posters).

Under the supervision of hematologists and medical oncologists from

1994 – 1995 I have participated in the care of cancer patients with

direct responsibility for inpatient and outpatient chemotherapy,

general internal medicine issues and autologous bone marrow

transplantation, from bone marrow harvest and reinfusion to post-

transplant care.

I have an avid interest in teaching, and this along with a strong research

component, as well as an active clinical practice, are an integral

part of my future career direction as a primary-care

practitioner/clinical researcher. In addition, I also have some

formal training and experience in palliative care which has always

been an integral part of all my clinical experiences along with a

licence for the use of Methadone for analgesic purposes. Chronic

pain treatment is a special interest of mine. I also have a

background in substance abuse treatment (see ARC 1992-94

under Appointments) which has remained an interest in all my

practices.

I have and continue to participate in various clinical studies at the

cutting edge of innovations in patient care, in many varied parts of

clinical medicine.
