Assembles and repairs the less complex modules of the turbine engine such as accessory gearboxes and reduction gear boxes. Examines parts and assembles for serviceability, repairs or replaces parts, and assemblies as required. Performs cannibalization on unserviceable items to obtain critical parts that are not available through normal supply channels. Marries or joins together the four major modules and other accessories to form a complete turbine engine. Conducts oil flow and airflow tests on parts as required. Assists higher-grade mechanic in the repair of engines and correcting deficiencies or rejects from test stand. Operates air wrenches, drills, and other hand tools common to the trade.

Supervisor or higher-grade employee assigns work and provides assistance on unusual problems. Incumbent selects required tools and decides on methods and techniques to use; is relied on to secure and use standard replacement parts; and is responsible for observing all standard operating and safety procedures. Completed work is checked for compliance with requirements.

1. Performs acceptance/in-process inspection of a variety of complete combat vehicles such as tanks, tank retrievers, missile carriers, personnel carriers, bridge launchers and similar vehicles.

2. Performs identification, classification, in-process and/or acceptance inspection of automotive components and assemblies such as engines, transmissions, steering assemblies, electrical systems and power train assemblies.

Performs acceptance/in-process inspection on complete combat vehicles such as tanks, tank retrievers, missile carriers, bridge assembly vehicles, personnel carriers which include a wide variety of major components/systems. Makes recommendations or changes to correct condition or deficiency considering the interrelationship of all systems and components on the total vehicle. Inspects major assemblies, subassemblies and components such as engines, transmissions, power pack, fuel and electrical systems, hydraulic systems, harnesses, pumps, valves, connections, etc.

2. Performs identification, classification, in-process and/or acceptance inspection of a variety of large engines (including diesel, multi-fuel, and turbine gasoline engines), transmissions (including those with torque connectors, planetary gears), steering assemblies, electrical systems, power train, hydraulic systems, harnesses, pumps, valves, connections, etc., during storage and depot maintenance (repair, overhaul, modification) processes. Inspection of these items includes the acceptance of new procurement pre-contractual specifications inspection of inter-depot transfers, and classification of returned material. Makes recommendations or changes to correct condition or deficiency. Prepares report on non-conforming material indicating corrective action required.

Determines serviceability of material using a variety of test and diagnostic equipment such as outside and inside micrometers, feeler gages, dial indicators, torque wrenches, pressure gages, tachometers, timing lights, engine analyzers, dynamometers, ammeter, ohmmeter, borescope, internal surface projectors, injector testers, ignition timers, and other instruments related to the trade. Assures that all applicable Maintenance Work Orders (MWO's) and Engineering Change Orders (ECO's) have been applied. Performs controlled inspection as required of vehicle that is combat loaded (dump ammunition). As required, performs test track performance test in accordance with applicable standards and specifications. Assists off-depot teams in inspection of material for shipment on international logistics programs. Based on results of inspection, prepares reports on all deficiencies indicating required corrective action.

Applies a thorough knowledge of the commodity, craft, skill, or trade, and quality control plans and procedures in performance of inspections. When written plans are not provided, determines acceptable quality levels, lot size, and sample size. Classifies defects as required and makes decisions on acceptability of material based on established criteria. Makes recommendations for disposition of non-conforming material; records inspection results as required in the data feedback system. Posts data and provides necessary information for initiation of corrective action reports as required. Performs inspection in conjunction with quality audits and special reliability investigations during various processes to detect quality deviations and determine causes of non-conforming material. Provides Quality Assurance Specialists with information concerning damaged or improper material. Assists off-depot teams when performing inspection in assigned area.

Must possess a valid Government operator's permit to operate all types of tanks and other vehicles when inspecting vehicles or driving to range. May be required to possess a valid special skill certificate to test drive vehicles on test track.

Supervisor makes assignments, issues general instructions and discusses with incumbent any unusual circumstances; is available for consultation on difficult problems and makes decisions affecting overall operation or those of a policy nature; keeps incumbent informed on results of pre-production conferences and advises as to changes to requirements and procedures. Work is subject to spot check for soundness of judgment and compliance with established procedures and regulations. Quality control procedures, drawings, blueprints, specifications, technical manuals, regulations, and a variety of other reference materials serve as guidelines.

Work is performed in shop, dock, open area, or at vehicle test track. Must be able to climb on, off, and inside vehicles, and around dynamometer test facilities. Dirt, dust, and grease are frequently present. Vehicle fluids, such as battery acids and hydraulic fluids, may cause burns or irritate the skin. During road test is subject to road hazards and testing course hazards. There is frequent exposure to the possibility of cuts, bruises, shocks, burns, and strains.

Performs a variety of multi-skill, entry level mechanic duties required in the overhaul and modification of weapon systems for combat vehicles, such as the Bradley Fighting Vehicle and the Multiple Launch Rocket System (MLRS). Assists in disassembly, repair, rebuild, modification, installation, and maintenance of electronic, electrical, mechanical, optical, electro-optical, pneumatic, and hydraulic assemblies and subassemblies of less complex components and subassemblies on combat vehicle weapons systems, that include erecting devices, electronic guidance and control components, turret drives, gun mounts and launching devices. Performs work, as required on-site (CONUS and OCONUS).

Performs a variety of routine and repetitive work, such as limited repair and rebuild operations concerned with the more simple subassemblies and components of electronic, electrical, mechanical, optical, electro-optical, pneumatic and hydraulic assemblies of weapon systems for combat vehicle systems. Assists higher-grade personnel in overhauling, modifying, repairing and testing of moderately complex equipment, such as inter-related electronic units, turret drives, launching devices, gun mounts, erecting devices, integrated site units, etc. Performs preliminary visual and/or dimensional checks, disassembly, repair/replacement and adjusts subassemblies, as required. Uses a variety of hand tools and standard test equipment in the performance of the duties. Assists in performing operational checks of subsystems and components to assure optimum operating effectiveness. Receives formal and informal training on systems involving electrical, mechanical, pneumatic and hydraulics in the shop or on-site maintenance, on new equipment, material fielding, from quality assurance and logistics assistance teams as required by the various commands. Handles, removes, and disposes of hazardous material in accordance with standard operating procedures.

Initially receives specific instructions and close guidance from supervisor or higher-grade worker. As experience is gained, employee is required to perform the routine, simple tasks with less supervision.
