Work Related Activities:
Served as Staff Representative on the Department of Engineering Science and Mechanics
Communication and Planning Committee. This Committee was formed to resolve the possible
demise and/or mergence of this Department with another Department in the College of
Engineering. This Committee worked very hard to preserve the Department and work
towards a resolution to make all parties happy we won and the Department of Engineering
Science and Mechanics remains a stable, viable department.
Served as a founding member of the College of Engineering Association for Staff
Employees. This Committee helped form the existing Staff Senate for the University.
Many details were involved and many hours spent negotiating the necessity for this
important Senate to be formed at this University.
Member of the Engineering Science and Mechanics Norris Hall Space Review Panel,
September 2007. This panel proposed to recreate community in Norris Hall by building
welcoming communal learning, discovery and outreach spaces for students.
Member of the Engineering Science and Mechanics 100th Anniversary Celebration
Committee, September 2007-. I helped organize the Mechanics Conference held here at
The Inn at Virginia Tech and Shelton Conference Center in May 2008. I also took the lead
in designing a small garden in the front of Norris Hall to commemorate this anniversary.

Challenge of Change; Management Duties; Oral Communication; How to Manage Priorities and
Meet Deadlines; Personnel Activity Reports; Leadership and Supervisory Skills for Women;

Member of Office Managers Development Group, Class of 2003-2004. Member of Office
Managers Development Group Alumni, 2005-present. The purpose of this professional
development program is to provide members with a way to exchange ideas and to develop
their skills and abilities. Participants will become more valuable to their departments by
increasing their knowledge of campus policies, procedures and programs; becoming aware of
computer software that might be advantageous to their developmental needs; improving
supervision skills and developing more self-confidence in carrying out their complex roles.
Other Activities:
Gardening, reading, and crafts.
Newport Village Garden Club, 1994-present. While interacting with this nice group of
women and discussing garden issues can be a lot of fun and very informative it is also a lot
of hard work. As a member of the Newport Village Garden Club I helped maintain gardens at
the Super-Valu, Post Office, and Newport Recreation Center. I also served as President
twice (2000-2001), which meant the added responsibility of overseeing each monthly
meeting, helping coordinate speakers, and overall keeping the group motivated. In 2002 the
Garden Club had their first fundraising event, which was a plant sale with all the proceeds
donated to the Newport Volunteer Rescue Squad. In 2003 the Garden Club again held a
plant sale with all the proceeds donated to the Newport Volunteer Fire Department. Over
the years, I have always stressed the importance of doing fundraisers for our volunteer
first responder organizations.
Newport Community Action Committee (NCAC), 1998-2003. In 1998 I joined the Board
of the Newport Community Action Committee, which has been maintaining the Newport
Recreation Center since 1985. I was a moving force in keeping the Newport Recreation
Center functioning and organizing the operations and record keeping of the board. During
this time I served as Vice President, Secretary, Communication Manager, and Lease
Committee Chair. As lease committee chair, I undertook the formidable task of writing,
obtaining, and enforcing leases for the upstairs rooms of the building that are rented to
provide funds necessary to keep the building open and acted as a contact person for lessees.
Anyone who has ever leased commercial property can well appreciate what a thankless task
this can be.
Special Member of the Newport Volunteer Fire Department. I feel a true dedication to
the Newport Volunteer Fire Department, and have said many times these guys put their
life on the line each time a call goes out and I have the highest regard for each and every
one of them. I have assisted them in letter writing campaigns and general correspondence.
In 2002 I was instrumental in a grant writing campaign, which resulted in a FEMA grant of
$40,000 for new turnout gear for the Fire Department. In 2004, I helped with grant
writing to FEMA and the department received a brand new truck. Each year there is a
Turkey Dinner Fundraiser the weekend before Thanksgiving. I have always helped to get
this together and spend most of that weekend cooking and helping on the day of the dinner.
The firefighters have been so grateful for my help that I was presented with 2 awards for
volunteer work.
Nominated for the 2002 Good Neighbor of the Year Award for the Village of Newport.
Recipient of the 2003 Good Neighbor of the Year Award for the Village of Newport.
Quote from award: `` This volunteer is truly an outstanding individual. A valuable asset to
any organization and a great neighbor. Much of her work goes unrecognized, because she is
the type of person who leads by example and works quietly when necessary. She does not
shy away from uncomfortable situations and can be verbal when the situation calls for a
strong voice of reason. A person you can count on, this volunteer s commitment to
community comes through not just in her involvement in organized civic activities, but to her
neighbors in and around the Village of Newport. She is always there with a friendly smile, a
hug if you need one, a shoulder to cry on and share your grief, and is a friend who is always
easy laugh with. What better neighbor could any of us have?
Master Gardener, 2007
Virginia Cooperative Extension (VCE)-Master Gardener is an individual who acts on behalf of
VCE as a volunteer educator within his or her community after receiving specialized training
in environmental horticulture through cooperative programming with VCE.
To become a VCE Master Gardener, individuals must attend at least 50-60 hours of
classroom instruction and then contribute a minimum of 50 hours of volunteer service
conducting VCE horticulture-based, education programs. These initial 50 hours must be
completed in one year. At the end of the year, they have earned the title of VCE Master
Gardener. If they desire to remain active after completing their initial training and
volunteer commitments are required to contribute at least 20 hours of volunteer service
each year. Additionally, in order keep knowledge up-to-date, VCE-MGs must participate in at
least 8 hours of recertification training.
Recipient of 2010 Department Head Staff Award, Engineering Science & Mechanics,
Virginia Tech
``I am pleased to convey that Ms. Sally Shrader is this year's recipient of the Department
Head's Award. She has worked in our department for approximately twenty seven years
and has one of the longest tenures among our staff.
In addition to her normal duties, Ms. Shrader has shown extraordinary leadership and
effort in several instances. For example, she handled much of the organization and
correspondence associated with the conference commemorating the 100th anniversary of
the founding of the ESM Department. She has also worked on the biennial conferences for
nonlinear vibrations for many iterations, one of which occurred during the same summer as
the 100th anniversary conference.
Ms. Shrader was cited by her nominators in regard to her assistance in developing
significant research proposals. Her organization and attention to detail were praised, the
bottom line being that she allows her faculty to more fully focus on their responsibilities.
Even in regard to such chores as moving from Burruss Hall to Norris Hall, she has been more
than willing to do the necessary work. On a nonacademic matter of particular interest to
me, she developed the welcoming garden in front of Norris Hall to celebrate the centenary
of our department.
