Profile

Roberta Ahrens is one of Northern California’s Master Decorative Painters with 25 years experience in the application of classic and contemporary painted finishes throughout the San Francisco Bay Area. She specializes in a number of different techniques including Sky Ceilings, Old World Stone, Faux Bois, Murals, Hand Painted Custom Maps, large Fine Art Paintings, Contemporary Painted Botanicals & Digital Photography.

Born in Roseburg, Oregon, Roberta moved to San Francisco in 1981 to apprentice with her sister, Shelley Masters, an instructor at the Day Studio Workshop and a well known Master Finisher herself.

Roberta continued to expand her horizons and her training in her next enterprise which saw her travel around quite a bit in her role as lead finisher for the distinguished firm of Evans & Brown, internationally renowned for their Murals, Tromp l’oleil and special effects for residential and commercial projects.

This marked the beginning of Roberta’s career as a “Decorative Artist”. After becoming a licensed painting contractor, she formed her own company specializing in Faux Finishes and murals, Ahrens Studio, which proved itself as a successful enterprise.

Her next step was partnering in the development on a new business, Studio Replica in Petaluma, which was active between 1999 and 2007. Once again, Roberta’s artistic talents shone through and the Studio was awarded Best In Show and Gold Medal Awards at the 2005 San Francisco Flower And Garden Show.

Her long-time practical knowledge of artistic applications and her extensive experience in painting large-scale murals led her to develop her own dazzling, unique style of painting on a canvas that she makes by hand, called cracked linen and that she has been perfecting for the last 5 years. The results are truly breathtaking, adding a depth and presence to her floral subjects that makes them come alive, almost as if they were three-dimensional paintings.

Roberta has been published in a variety of interior design magazines such as Architectural Digest and Better Homes and Garden. Roberta’s work can be admired in several locations around the Bay Area; Macy’s store on Union Square in downtown San Francisco showcases a beautiful 9’ by 85’ mural which can be seen as you walk inside from the O’Farrell entrance; the Westin St.Francis Hotel also in SF. features two penthouses, “Alexandra’s” and “Victor’s” which have been adorned by grand scale murals of Roberta’s magic touch.

San Francisco is not the only city to benefit from Roberta’s artistry, as she has worked all over the country, in many private homes as well as in many hotels, wineries and restaurants.. A few examples of her activity can be seen at the Napa Valley Grill San Diego and Rhode Island, the California Cafe’ in Schaumburg, Illinois, or the Ferrari-Carano Winery’s Corporate Villa in Healdsburg.
