Summary
Web developer with backend skills in Ruby (Rails and Sinatra). My strongest skillset is
creating rich interfaces using native web technologies. I also do professional level
design and know Linux like the back of my hand. I am a vimmer.
Background
I immensely enjoy making stuff and have been passionate about computers since as long as
I can remember. Obtaining an Atari 400 or 800 was an early dream of mine. My first
computer eventually was an Atari 800 XL.
In high school I took AP computer programming. In college my interest veered to desktop
publishing, computer art, and animation (Amiga). After university I moved to the D.C.
area, where I took even more desktop publishing courses at George Washington University.
My interest again changed as I obtained work as a Sysadmin where I learned Linux and
eventually introduced it into the MS networks I was managing.
I started dabbling in web development and Flash during those days. Having a good
foundation in design from my desktop publishing days, I taught myself the LAMP stack.
Within a year I professionally switched over to web development. That was about 12 years
ago and now I am hooked on developing great software.
Recent Work History
Rails developer and Founder Simplton 2005-Present
In 2005 we needed a good issue tracker for our team working on NGJ Express. Nothing we
tried such as Bugzilla or Sharepoint fit the bill.
I decided to create one. Here is the whole story.
Did all the design, graphics, and systems work too.
Application is six years in the making and loaded with features.
Tech
Reams of Javascript/CSS/HTML. Prototype.js, jQuery and jQuery UI.
Rails 3.1/Ruby 1.9 Started app in Rails 1.x
Marketing pages leverage CSS 2.1/3 but still deprecates well.
MySQL
Ubuntu ServerRails developer Yesware: Cambridge, MA Dec. 2011 - Jan. 2012: Contract
Created foundations for the automated testing of their Chrome extension using Rspec,
Capybara, and Selenium
Principal developer and Co-founder NGJ Express: 2002 - Present: Contract
Self-funded this venture with a bit of seed money. In return we received equity for a
duration of time.
Venture was near its death about a year-and-a-half into development. We turned to a
little known IE browser technology called XMLHTTPRequest to wrap a 12-page app into a
single page one. After that we were able to win company-wide adoption. This was 2003,
approximately two years before the term Ajax was coined.
Today the application is a company cornerstone handling almost all aspects of Customs
Brokerage.
Personally coded and designed a great majority of the application. Moreover, I handle all
web server and database administration.
