Job History / Details:

I began my career with legacy U.S. Customs on August 1st 1988 as an Import Specialist at JFK International Airport in New York. I was an associate Import Specialist then for Customs and received numerous awards for seizing bulk shipments of illegally imported goods.

My colleagues and I made numerous seizures of illegally imported merchandise where unscrupulous importers would attempt to obtain a lower rate of duty during the importation process. In 1991, I received the honor of becoming a member of the JFK Trade Enforcement Team which was comprised of 6 Import Specialists and 6 Officers for the exclusive purpose of seizing illegally imported merchandise at various warehouses and factories throughout the New York / New Jersey area.

Perhaps my biggest accomplishment occurred while working at the passenger terminal at JFK airport. While working under the direction of D.E.A, I seized a large quantity of cocaine swallowed by a passenger arriving in the United States, with a street value of $250,000. As a result of my efforts, the passenger was arrested, the drugs were discharged, and the passenger was eventually deported. I received a special award from the Area Port Director at JFK for his efforts.

In 1993 I accepted the position of Supervisory Entry Specialist at the port of Cleveland, Ohio. While in Cleveland, I streamlined the process of taking Customs duty collections and deposits timely, by working with the Federal Reserve Bank and the Department of the Treasury for the purpose of making duty collections and deposits more "port friendly". I lobbied the Department of the Treasury for permission to use local banks for these tasks. I was awarded the honor of "Federal Employee of the Year" for his efforts. While in Cleveland, I also began numerous community outreach projects for Customs including the "Adopt-A-School Program" where I and several Customs volunteers visited Willson Middle School on a weekly basis and talked to the kids about the value of education and career choices facing them in the near future. I also organized an annual picnic for the kids by bringing together 5 schools from the inner city and 5 schools from the suburbs to interact with each other and to engage in educational activities sponsored by local companies with an emphasis on career choices Mike also organized joint projects between these schools where they visited each other's schools and worked together on school projects to dispel any cultural barriers to education. The kids were given journals and cameras by the local newspaper "The Plain Dealer" in an effort to test their skills as journalists and photographers. I was issued a special proclamation by the City of Avon Lake for encouraging joint school projects between the two school systems.

I also initiated a "Scared Straight" program at the Middle School where the Cleveland Department of Corrections would bring teen-aged inmates to the school to warn the children about the horrors of incarceration. I eventually received the "Commissioners Award for Community Outreach" for all of the above mentioned projects.

In 2001, I accepted the position of Entry Specialist Course Developer Instructor at the Federal Law Enforcement Academy in Brunswick, Georgia. I was responsible for the training of newly appointed Entry Specialists and credits legendary Instructor Judy Smith for starting him on the instructional path. I was also responsible for teaching the "Importing Process" and other subjects to Import Specialists, ICE Agents, Customs Scientists, Attorneys, Drawback Specialists and Regulatory Auditors.

In 2006, I became Supervisory Entry Officer at the port of Charleston, SC and supervised "The Best Entry Section in Customs and Border Protection" for 4 years. While at the port of Charleston, I also organized the "Kids & CBP" Christmas" events for 3 years which netted over three thousand toys for the MUSC Children's Hospital, the Callen - Lacey Center for Children, "My Sister's House", Camp Happy Days, and the Lowcountry Center for Children.

In 2010, I accepted the position of Course / Developer / Instructor this time at the CBP Field Operations Academy in Charleston, where I taught classes for incoming Import Specialists, Entry Specialists, Regulatory Auditors, and Scientists. Throughout my teaching career, I estimate graduating over 400 Entry Specialists most of whom are currently deployed throughout the major Ports of Entry within the U.S., and countless numbers of Customs students mentioned above who have passed through, graduated, and become productive employees through my tutelage.

In closing, I hope that in some small way I have made an impact on everyone whom I have encountered during my 24 years with legacy Customs and Customs and Border Protection, and that I am very grateful to have had the opportunity to meet such outstanding people in Customs, the Trade Community, and the community which I am privileged to have served.

Thank you everyone!
