PROFILE
I have loved being creative all my life, from drawing on the bulletin in church, to successfully teaching others
how to implement techniques and view their world in a completely different way. I have a passion for truly
great and innovative design and imagery and believe that when we look at a well-done artistic piece or a well-
framed photograph, we are viewing a frozen moment in time which we can preserve for the viewer and give
them the same sense of pleasure that came from creating it.
EXPERIENCE
Lead Instructor, Graphic Design and Advertising, Wilkes Community College, Wilkesboro, NC 2004-Now
I currently serve as the program director for the graphic design program, and as its Lead Instructor, I oversee the
implementation of new software, literature and hardware, when needed. I write all course syllabi and direct the
ow for the program, as well as act as a personal advisor to each and every one of my students.
Senior Website Designer/Senior Print Designer, Lowe s Companies, Inc., Mooresville, NC 1998-2004
Serving rst as a freelance print media designer, I worked my way up through the company to the title of Senior
Designer, after two years. I was responsible for all tabloid advertising, which included gathering product pho-
tography, selecting models and directing photo shoots for cover images and high-end room shots, where I
worked directly with the studios. I transferred to the Lowes.com division when it began hiring, in the interest of
staying on top of the latest media, and after 2-1/2 years, I was promoted to Senior Website Designer, where I
helped launch Lowe s tool brand, Kobalt. I was also instrumental in the construction of Kobalt s website as well
as LowesRacing.com and many interactive installation how-to s for Harbor Breeze Fans across our libraries of
online information. I also served as the brand coordinator for Lowes.com s vendor pages, where I worked di-
rectly with brands such as Porter Cable, Dewalt, Valspar, Shop-Vac and many others.
Graphic Artist, Walt Klein & Associates, (formerly Winston-Salem, NC) Boulder, CO 1998
I began this job with the promise of higher wages and possibilities of meeting people deep within the Triad s
design world in order to further my career. I thoroughly enjoyed my time here as a graphic artist and I gained
valuable skills in screen printing knowledge, color separations and output devices.
Prepress Technician/Designer, Prepress Graphics, Winston-Salem, NC 1996-1998
Many of the original skills I learned in my time at East Carolina were put to good use here, as I was given re-
sponsibilities ranging from true creative design, to high-end lm output, to high-resolution graphics camera
operator, to their rst web designer. It was here that I learned the proper way for setting up a le to be sent to a
printer and how to ensure the least, if any, amount of kinks in the output system.
Graphic Artist, International Imaging Inc., Winston-Salem, NC 1995-1996
My rst job out of college where I was given opportunities to meet directly with clients on their design needs,
as well as aid both the design department and production departments in any tasks that needed be done. Most
work was done for RJ Reynolds and their Lifesavers division. Most jobs consisted of digital production of
packaging design and building physical comps for presentation to the client.

SKILLS
During my design career, I have become familiar with a vast array of production techniques and a wide variety
of graphic design procedures. From hand-cut rubylith at a small screen-printing shop, to advanced photo ma-
nipulation and color correcting, I have been there to see the rise of technology in this business, and being a
college-level instructor, I have had ample access to continuously stay on top of industry standards by making
sure that our students always use up-to-date software, such as Adobe CS5 and hardware, such as the 27 iMacs
now included in my work lab.
I am a huge Apple fanboy and sci- geek. I am an active member of the 501st Legion, the of cially Lucas lm-
recognized Star Wars costuming organization, with chapters worldwide.
I am also the former owner of Brian Barker Photography, where I specialized in weddings and special events. I
am currently one of a small group of of cial photographers, sanctioned by Wilkes Community College, to pho-
tograph artists, fans and events at the annual MerleFest Americana Music Festival held in April and May each
year in Wilkesboro, NC, on the campus of Wilkes Community College.
As far as software skills, I am pro cient in Adobe Illustrator, Photoshop, Dreamweaver, InDesign, Lightroom, as
well as Microsoft word and Powerpoint, and iWorks 09, consisting of Pages, Numbers and Keynote and am
