Research Assistant at CTEDTrotro: First Class Web Browsing in Rural Ghana2012 ~ 2012, located at New York University Abu Dhabi, is a multidisciplinary research center that focuses on combining economic principles, technological advances, and human-centric design to create innovative solutions for the problems experienced in emerging regions.
The quality of Internet connections around the world is
extremely varied and exceptionally poor in rural areas.
During an initial user study of aspiring Internet users in
rural Ghana we found that despite high enthusiasm and
investment of resources into computers, poor connectivity
and lack of computer knowledge deter Internet use. To
improve information access in these types of settings, we
take the approach of increasing the availability and usability
of web browsing. We designed TroTro (originally named RuralCafe), a web searching
and browsing system that maintains a first class user
experience despite fluctuating connectivity and a wide
range of user expertise. We report on results from usability
testing of TroTro at schools and Internet caf s in rural
Ghana. Our usability results show evidence that our system
allows both novice and expert computer users to enhance
their individual web experience, explore content across
different kinds of network conditions, and share resources
within their community.
