During my 5-year tenure at Quaker City Insurance Company as its Chief Operating Officer, the Company grew profitably as a regional writer of personal and commercial automobile insurance from $3.4 million in direct written premium in 1991, to $25.5 million at year-end 1995. Policyholders? surplus grew largely as a result of retained earnings, from $1.7 million at year-end 1991, to $6.8 million at year-end 1995. Operations were expanded from PA, to encompass DE, MD, VA, WV, DC and NJ. At year-end 1995, Quaker City?s statutory combined ratio was 94.1. This was its last year of reporting on a stand-alone basis. The Company was subsequently adversely impacted by a Group-wide inter-company pooling arrangement.
