Professional Experience
Sr. Product Design Engineer, Firmware & Hardware Jan. 2006 to Present
Porter Instrument Company, Inc.
Hatfield, PA
Designed and built the electronics for a digital dental mixer for nitrous oxide analgesia applications.
I wrote the digital firmware for the digital dental mixer to meet the requirements of FDA Software Design Controls.
The digital mixer was designed to meet all of the EN60601-1 medical directives, UL testing and CE Mark testing and I supervised those tests
and the digital mixer passed all of those tests.
I also designed and built the test fixture to calibrate and test the digital dental mixer. The software for this test fixture was written in Visual
Basic.
Automated the company’s mass flow controller assembly line, saving the company $500k per year.
Was an integral team member in acquiring a competitors nitrous analgesia products and merging these products into our assembly line. This
included automating some of the testing to meet FDA cGMPs. This acquisition added 6 million dollars a year to the company’s sales.
Oct. 2004 to Jan. 2006
Sr. Product Engineer
Porter Instrument Company, Inc.
Hatfield, PA
Designed and built the electronics for a text based messaging device using a custom monopanel type keyboard and utilizing a vacuum
fluorescent display (VFD). This messaging device was used in dental offices to communicate from office to office. It also interfaced to personal
computers via an RS-485 serial link.
Designed and wrote the software, which involved writing in C and assembly language to interface to the keyboard and the VFD. There was
also an operating system that would allow the personal computer to store various user-defined settings such as buzzer loudness, VFD
brightness, stored doctors’ names, etc.
Designed and wrote a Visual Basic application to run on the personal computer in this system. Wrote software validation test protocols
conforming to ISO-9000 standards (IEEE Std. 1012-1986, IEC 61506, IEC 61508).
Designed and built a single tube automated volume tube system, a primary NIST standard for flow measurement, which was used to calibrate
industrial gas flow controllers. Designed and built the electronics, which involved designing the signal conditioning electronics to a pressure
sensing device, optical sensing devices and temperature sensing devices. This project also utilized analog to digital converters and digital to
analog converters. Designed and wrote the firmware, which involved writing in C and assembly language a real time operating system, which
responded to commands via a personal computer sent via a RS-232 serial link.
I also wrote the Visual Basic application program, which was the user interface and sent the various commands to run the system.
Wrote software validation test protocols conforming to ISO-9000 standards (IEEE Std. 1012-1986, IEC 61506, IEC 61508).
Designed the metrology system used to calibrate the volume tube conforming to ANSI/NCSL Z540-1-94 and ANSI/NCSL Z540 - 2-97
standards.
Wrote an application program in Visual Basic to perform some of the metrology tasks in an automated fashion.
Product Engineer Jan. 1997 to Oct. 2004
Porter Instrument Company, Inc.
Hatfield, PA
Designed the electronics and wrote the software for a 8051 based Automatic Gas Switching Manifold used for a nitrous oxide delivery system
for dental offices.
Designed and wrote the software to run the system, this involved writing a program in C and assembly language.
Wrote software validation test protocols conforming to ISO-9000 standards (IEEE Std. 1012-1986, IEC 61506, IEC 61508).
