To Whom It May Concern:
My name is Debra Songer. I am 53 years old and have been practicing dentistry for 12 years.
During this time I owned my own practice, which I sold to a dental corporation in December. I
worked for them for 6 months during the transition which ended in June, 2009.
My husband and I will be relocating to the south-east soon to be near family. I would be
available for employment immediately.
I have essentially had two careers, one in corporate environments where I was fortunate to see
the inner workings of almost all departments of manufacturing and research facilities as a QA
auditor. I was also very involved in uncovering problems and applying a root cause analysis to
determine what went wrong, how to resolve the immediate problem and how to apply corrective
action so that the problem would not reoccur. I wrote hundreds of Standard Operating
Procedures during this time. My Quality Assurance background also served me well in my
second career as a dentist. I had observed the value in standardization of equipment and
material, in written procedures and in training. I was also very good in both careers at utilizing
computerized reports and programs like Quick Books and Excel to analyze data.
At this time in my life, I would like to work in a public health setting. I have always been
passionate about supporting the military and have never had an outlet to do that. Recently, I
worked for two days at Buckley Field in Colorado providing dental treatment to soldiers returning
from Iraq. That was an extremely rewarding experience. Because I feel strongly about wanting
to give back to active military troops, working on a base would be my first choice of
employment. I have well rounded skills and would be comfortable with the duties of a treating
dentist and/or in a supervisory/mentoring situation.
My dental philosophy is to treat every patient with compassion and dignity. I believe that treating
disease is the first priority for patients and that there can be more than one solution to restoring
form and function. Being open minded, opened my practice to many patients who were given
the brush off in “high end” practices. While I did a substantial amount of crown, bridge and
cosmetic dentistry, I also did far more immediate dentures than the average dentist because
they were affordable and pragmatic for many patients. I also increased multifold the amount of
implant dentistry that I did in my practice in the last few years, both in placing and restoring
implants. Although, I have not done many amalgams in recent years due to patient preference,
I do believe that they have a place in dentistry. That was all that I placed when I worked at
Buckley Field and clearly saw the usefulness of amalgam in the military population.
Thank you for considering me for this position. I look forward to hearing from you.
Sincerely,
Debra Songer, DDS
