Merchandising & Buying

Led retail merchandising team focused on recurring revenue businesses (sales of dial -up

internet, magazine subscriptions, Vonage) with combined revenue of $105MM and gross

margins of over 95%.

Responsible for annual business plans; P&L management (sales, gross & net margin);

promotional strategies; and product and vendor assortment decisions.

Grew magazine subscription business 17% year -over-year by adjusting assortment and

tripled Vonage revenue by re-negotiating contract and reinventing consumer promotions.

Led the life cycle management of dial-up internet business by designing a request-for-

proposal bidding process which winnowed the assortment from five national internet

companies to two while increasing Best Buy’s revenue by 15% for each new subscriber.

Negotiations & Sales

Negotiated multiple, complex contracts. Deal points included upfront payments; bounty and

residual payments; joint marketing programs; long-term consumer promotions; significant

back-end IT processes for data transmitting; and bonus structures.

Negotiated six sponsorship programs with a combined value of $33MM. Directly responsible

for another $2-4MM in annual marketing budget while influencing similar spending in other

department budgets.

Sold $12MM worth of incremental sponsorship and experiential marketing campaigns to five

separate vendors.

Negotiated thousands of individual purchases and sales of grain commodities including price,

quality, and time of shipment.

People and Relationship Management

Responsible for employee and internal contractor performance, development, and annual

reviews. Hired and promoted multiple individuals, including my replacement in two separate

instances.

Managed external marketing agency relationships: defined requirements, negotiated

contracts and pricing, oversaw day-to-day operations, and conducted periodic reviews.

Initiated, maintained, and managed vendor relationships through -out my career, interfacing

with company owners, executive management, sales reps, and account managers.

Communicated regularly with executive management (including “C-level”) at Best Buy with

presentations, updates, and sign-off on both merchandising and sponsorship details.

Sponsorship Marketing

Founded Best Buy’s NASCAR sponsorship program and grew the sponsorship from zero to

eight figures in four years with an annual 5:1 return on investment.

Championed, negotiated, and led the campaign for the “Best Buy 400,” Best Buy’s first title

sponsorship of a NASCAR race which resulted in a return of 550%.

Instituted and directed a multi-year marketing study which concluded that Best Buy customers

who are NASCAR fans had increased their average monthly spend by 50% vs. non-fans who

had decreased their spend by 12% since the beginning of Best Buy’s sponsorship.

General Marketing

Developed and managed numerous marketing campaigns utilizing print and online

advertising, contests, direct mail, ROP, email, PR, and experiential marketing.

Designed and implemented an affinity club within Best Buy’s loyalty program that signed up

65k people and generated $10MM of incremental revenue in six months.

Managed the $2MM annual experiential marketing budget for a mobile vehicle tour and led a

revamp of the customer experience which resulted in a 30% increase in traffic year-over-year.

Strategy

Re-evaluated Best Buy’s NASCAR marketing strategy after three years; switched the

sponsored race team/driver; and focused marketing efforts to Best Buy’s loyalty program.

Result was an increase in the sponsorship marketing value of 70% year-over-year.

Led the development of, and wrote the first business plan for, a $3MM company selling

equipment, parts, and service to municipal customers.

Led customer segmentation strategy for a start-up waste and recycling brokerage which

resulted in a clearly articulated strategy to focus on middle-market, multi-location, national

companies.
