Rabbit – A Jump Ahead

Open on high, over head time lapse shot of 6th, Austin, Texas at the height of the night’s music loving, bar hopping

crowds, through to pre-dawn. Loud rock music gives way to just the sound of street cleaners on the empty street…Traffic

signals changing colors at now vehicle-less intersections…green…amber…red, reflected in the wet pavement

Dawn sky behind the State Capital building…now at Dean Keeton Street: Dawn progresses in the open pedestrian space

across the street from the Student Services Building…a VW Rabbit drives into frame and parks in the center of the open

space. Two men dressed in VW blue coveralls exit the car. The electronic sound of the Rabbit locking abruptly cuts

through the early notes of the dawn chorus…one man gives a quick, almost loving, casual polish of the VW logo on the

grill. Both now begin to walk away, giving one final, over the shoulder, seemingly parental glance at the Rabbit. The

Rabbit is now alone…but not for long.

Through the lens of two hidden cameras and concealed m icrophones we capture the reactions of the students as they

discover the Rabbit on their way to and from classes. Their unguarded, admiring, honest and sometimes amusing verbal

comments in reaction to the Rabbit are edited over a series of day long wide shots of students walking around the

vehicle, peering in the windows, some stepping back to gain a wider view of the Rabbit in their midst…fingers pointing to

some detail that has caught their interest.

11

Late evening: A few students unfortunate to have late classes, despite the gathering gloom, try to peer into the car. The

two VW coverall dressed men from the morning reappear to claim back the vehicle. VW Man to two last remaining

students hovering by;

“Want a quick spin?”

The students nod eagerly.

“Okay. You drive. I’ll choose the music”

Keys are tossed to the girl. Cut to her expectant face as she turns on the ignition. VW man’s finger hits a radio button. In

mid song, the unmistakable sound of Van Halen’s, “Jump” blasts from the speakers.

Oh cant you see what I mean ?

Might as well jump. jump !

Go ahead, jump.

Might as well jump. jump !

Go ahead, jump.

(guitar solo)

(keyboard solo)

Might as well jump. jump !

Go ahead, jump.

12

Get it and jump. jump !

Go ahead, jump

To the strains of, “Jump”, Cut to overhead night shot of 6th Street, Austin. Heavy traffic…sidewalks crowded with people,

The VW Rabbit cruises down the street. As the song reaches its raucous final line, the male student winds down his

window…puts his arm out of the window and punches the air.

…and Jump!

FREEZE FRAME

Rabbit…always a jump ahead
