Hewlett-Packard
Loveland, CO 2000-2004
Develop HP NAS 8000 (Network Attached Storage appliance)
Subsystems owned: System Events, SNMP, Bonding (TCP/IP), SSH, security
Current Product Engineering (CPE), handling support escalations
Languages/Tools:
• C/C++
• SH/BASH scripting
• SNMP
• Linux Kernel, utilities, subsystems
• SSH/SSL
• SAN/iSCSI/Fibre Channel/virtual filesystems and storage protocols, both
proprietary and industry standard
Hewlett-Packard’s NAS 8000 was a Linux-based enterprise-class Network-Attached
Storage Device featuring High Availability, SAN data storage and management, Java
user interface, tight integration with Unix/Linux and Windows clients and a published
API for customers and third-parties to extend its functionality. I was a member of the
team responsible for that API, the lower levels of system configuration and management,
and the subsystems that made it work (essentially from Linux kernel modifications and
configuration all the way to the interface for the GUI, which was a separate team). My
responsibilities were focused on System Events, SNMP, TCP/IP configuration, SSH and
general security, as well as collaborating with other team members as needed.
LinuxMall.com
Aurora, CO 1996-2000
Develop E-Commerce Website
Tools include: PHP, Stronghold (Apache), Oracle
Create and maintain VPN between Colorado, Minnesota, Kansas and Netherlands
Languages/Tools:
• C/C++
• SH/BASH scripting
• Linux Kernel, utilities, subsystems
• SSH/SSL
• all data communications from dial-up to T1 and high-speed
• High-Availability redundancy architecture
LinuxMall was an internet start-up created to promote Linux and all related products.
While creating one of the first e-commerce websites, we also developed a complete
technology infrastructure for warehouse order processing, vendor integration and
community hub. I was the IT department for much of its early days, developing our own
Linux distribution, managing all data communications, developing tools for integrating
internal services, and working with the Linux community as the software matured.
Jones Interactive
Englewood, CO 1995-1996
Converted accounting data from mainframe to Unix systems
Develop tools to model data, test conversion accuracy and security
Automate procedures, accounting functions
Languages/Tools:
• SH/BASH scripting
• sed/awk
• Perl
• Crystal Report Writer
Develop tools to convert data from a legacy accounting system to a new Unix-based
system. Data conversion required complex mapping across differing data structures,
account organization, merging and combining data according to complex rules, and of
course, thorough testing. On transition day, all conversions succeeded according to plan.
American Management Systems
Lakewood, CO 1994-1995
Participate in the design of a large client/server project
Develop modules and utilities for data transfer between various subsystems
Languages/Tools:
•C
• TCP/IP
• SH/BASH scripting
• sed/awk
• Smalltalk
Develop a system to integrate data from legacy systems with Sun workstations for
customer service representatives to manage all wireless accounts, from calling up current
TV/Radio ads to billing and activity history. I inherited the middleware piece that
facilitated data exchange between the different components; one of my proudest moments
was overhauling an infamously buggy point of failure to a robust interface such that other
developers would preface questions with “I know the problem isn’t in the parser, but….”
StorageTek
Boulder, CO 1993-1994
Develop communications subsystem for a real-time RAID system
Languages/Tools:
•C
• RS-232
• SH/BASH scripting
• sed/awk
• proprietary error-reporting/support escalation automation system
Develop incident-reporting subsystem via proprietary multiplexers, modems, and custom
serial connectivity.
