Mechanical Design Engineer II Navico/Lowrance, Tulsa, Oklahoma 5/2004-9/2008
Mechanical Design Engineer I
Mechanical Engineer Intern
Technical
CAD Development of plastic enclosures for marine electronics/ GPS mapping systems/
accessories/electro-mechanical interface
Stereo lithography for rapid prototyping, Plastic injection molding, Heat staking, Ultra-
sonic welding, Connector/cable over molding, Mechanical test fixtures
CAD Development of sheet metal components for modular and progressive
stamping/fabrication/ electro-mechanical interface
Component chassis, RF/EMI shields, Heat Conduits, Cable strain relief components, and
Gimble brackets, Mechanical test fixtures
Thermal Engineering and Heat Transfer
Designed static heat transfer systems using methods and materials such as aluminum
1100, copper, die cast aluminum, thermally conductive pads, heat pipes, heat sinks (to
include fin geometry), and thermally conductive plastics
Field tested all products under random environmental conditions to validate and
determine temperature changes and conduction/convection heat transfer rates
Performed hand calculations (2D) for the purpose of determining and verifying film co-
efficient, proper fin geometry, and thermal resistance
Thermally evaluated product designs using Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD)
analysis software
Thermally profiled new products using data acquisition software
General Test Engineering
Performed mechanical and environmental tests on products/materials in accordance with
ASTM, IEC, and proprietary test standards criteria such thermal, shock, and vibration
Researched, sampled, and tested materials and mechanical components for new product
development
Technical/Other
Day to day interaction with Industrial Designers, Electrical Engineers, Drafters,
Manufacturing Engineers, and Project Managers
Day to day interaction with Vendors, OEM Customers, Engineering Consultants, and
Manufacturers
Overseen manufacturing operations in accordance with product assembly, design intent,
engineering change orders, and quality management
Developed and published written reports and recommendations based on test results
data
Developed and published product assembly and test procedure instruction manuals
Corresponded with vendors in the United States and abroad on a continual basis for co-
development and procurement of unique applications, products, and methods involving
new technology
Traveled to manufacturing facilities within the United States in order to obtain new and
reputable vendors
Negotiated with vendors and manufacturers on pricing and delivery of products,
materials, components, including approval of die cast, plastic injection molding, and sheet
metal tool design (many tools exceeding $100K)
Individual Accomplishments/John Zink
Developed a step by step hands on design manual for process burner design
Discovered an innovative approach to modeling compound angular orifices in combustion
gas tips
Completed projects on time and under budget
Individual Accomplishments/Navico
Successfully led a team of engineers to Taiwan in order to overcome design obstacles in
LED thermal management
As an Engineer Intern, was offered a permanent position at Navico after developing a
Quick Change Antenna lock system. Navico ended up selling over 100,000 units per year
over a 3-year period of time.
Introduced the use of waterproof automotive fuses to Navico’s products. This did away
with cylindrical glass fuses and saved the company over $75,000 annually
Updated and procured new test equipment such as ASTM salt fog chamber, de-ionization
water systems, and shock and vibration test mechanisms
Researched and convinced Navico to purchase CFD analysis software and became the
sole contributor of all heat transfer and thermal management design systems
Developed and implemented a new mechanical test report format that is the standard at
Navico today
Completed projects on or before deadlines and at or under budget
Other Accomplishments
3.75 GPA at Oklahoma State University
3.84 GPA at Tulsa Community College
Senior Design Team Leader at OSU
Golden Key Honor Society
Additional Work Experience
12 years of service with the Oklahoma Department of Corrections as a Cadet Officer,
Correctional Officer I, Correctional Officer II, and Correctional Counselor
Memberships
American Society of Mechanical Engineers
