EXPERIENCE
State University of New York at Stony Brook, Stony Brook, New York
Graduate Research Assistant in Chemistry (2003-2008)
Performed structural characterization for various materials via synchrotron X-ray diffraction
techniques. Systems studied include protein (collagen), mineral (apatite), polymer-matrix
composite (organoclay), polyelectrolytes (chitosan-grafted MPEG/hyaluronic acid), dicholesteryl
ester and siloxane-based liquid crystals, polyolefins, pluronic gels, etc. Also performed high-
resolution structure study for noble metal nanoparticles via TEM and SEM.
Studied the phase behavior and optical properties of cholesteric liquid crystals. Determined the
molecular pathway of phase transition by in-situ XRD measurements and thermal analysis.
Designed a sample chamber for a simultaneous synchrotron X-ray/light scattering system. Deve-
loped new schemes for analyzing SAXS fiber diffraction patterns, implemented the analysis and
simulation work in customized C++ and Mathematica programs.
Discovered a new molecular packing scheme for bone collagen based on the interpretation of the
XRD data. Studied the 3D ultrastructural evolution of bone tissue at different developing stages.
Conducted in vitro mineralization experiments using decalcified bone and collagen sponge.
Graduate Research Assistant in Materials Science (2001-2003)
Developed strong electron microscopy skills.
Performed failure analysis of LPCVD polysilicon thin films for MEMS fabrication. Identified the
structural defects that may cause the quick failure of MEMS devices by combined TEM/SEM
/AFM studies. Proposed a scheme to eliminate the material defects by modifying the furnace and
deposition conditions.
Prepared TiO2 multi-layer structure and investigated its ammonia sensing properties.
Studied the imperfections in Bi-Si-O single crystals by TEM and SEM.
Tsinghua University, Beijing, China
Research Assistant in Materials Science (1998-2001)
Prepared Nd2(Fe,Nb)14(B,C)1/alpha-Fe nanocomposite magnets by melt spinning and subsequent
heat treatment. Performed quantitative XRD phase analysis and determined the weight fraction
of the individual phases. Optimized the composition and processing conditions to obtain a high
remanence and energy product.
Developed a procedure to prepare anisotropic Nd2Fe14B/alpha-Fe nanocomposite magnets via
powder metallurgy and hot deformation methods.
Undergraduate Research in Materials Science (1995-1998)
Synthesized mesoporous TiO2 membranes on sintered Al2O3 substrate using sol-gel process.
Prepared glass-ceramic tiles and performed mechanical testing and XRD study for the materials.
