GetReel, CTO
The GetReel Health platform has been in development for 2+ years (
http://www.getreelhealth.com ). My first responsibilities as CTO to the
company was the following:
. Build a software engineering, system engineering and QA teams to
support the business.
. Design a scalable back end on the Amazon EC2 cloud to support our SAS
(software as a service) architecture.
. Conceptualize and design the requirements for the business to be able
to provide video trans-coding services to the masses, similar to
YouTube, integrated into our PHP application built with the Zend
Framework.
. Build functional and technical requirements for a specialized uploader
designed to function similar to Dropbox with special client-side video
trans-coding features, as well as conceptualizing the hooks required
to tie this all together within the context of a "GetReel MediaVault".
. Put processes in place to manage the software development lifecycle.
(SCM, test / staging environments, ticket system, continuous
integration environment, etc
. Defining and implementing change management processes for making
changes to our production software and systems environment.
. Managing the day to day engineering efforts.
GetReel is currently in the stage of seeking funding for its business. This
has been a very exciting 'sweat equity' position for me, with a great
opportunity to learn and grow.
Sept 2007 - Aug 2009
Erosguide.com, Director of System Engineering
When I first started with BBH, their software, environments and systems
were in a mangled state of disarray. The company was running on a mesh of
unmanaged, differently configured unix based systems. Many of which had odd
and hidden dependencies on each other. Their in-house CRM was not build-
able from source control, nor easy to program. Their in-house work ticket
system as well as several other systems would crash regularly, with the
lack of proper fail-over. In my first year of working with BBH, I
accomplished the following significant goals:
. Established escalation path for support of critical systems.
. Fixed 100's of bugs in their CRM. I made this software build-able in a
test, development, staging and production environments. Provided 6
successful releases, addressing many important business needs from the
operations department.
. Re-wrote the old perl based RT application in PHP, thus stabilizing
the application and significantly reducing the CPU and memory
requirements and increasing the speed, responsiveness and scalability.
. Created the system engineering department.
. Built a custom environment and configuration management system which
manages and deploys software and system configurations for multiple
environment types (dev, test, stage, production).
. Consolidated all UNIX systems to virtualized ESX v3 cluster.
Redesigned backup, monitoring and fail-over systems.
. Engineered and executed plan to migrate all internal systems from
Oakland to Raleigh.
. Stabilized Java environments, centralized configuration management.
. Built process and procedures to help trivialize the management and
support of the companies systems infrastructure.
Maintain a road map for system engineering department.
The system engineering department did not exist before my employment with
BBH Media. I put together and managed a group of system engineers while
interfacing with the project management and upper management groups,
translating their business needs into technical requirements and ensuing
the proper resources are in place and available for execution. My
department was responsible for:
. Migration of entire production environment (500G) over a 3Mb
connection from Oakland to Raleigh.
. ESX cluster management over wan replicated SAN fabric to provide
business continuity from Raleigh to Amsterdam.
. Change management for production, test and staging environments. These
environments are used to develop in-house software built on PHP using
Zend Framework and Java, J2EE, JBoss web applications.
. Software and system configuration management, version control
management (CVS, SVN, Phing, DBdeploy)
. Definition of technical requirements for our Unix environments
. 24x7 system monitoring and uptime (Nagios, OpenNMS).
. Storage Management, capacity planning. (NAS, SAN).
. Data recovery / retention procedures
. Technical project management (Software and systems).
. Expense planning
. Maintained environments for our development team, QA and production
servers.
. Provide end-user support to developers 24x7
. Provide second level support to IT department 24x7
With the current state of BBH's system environments being stable with a
team in place to manage it, I have moved on in the company to provide
technical project management and software engineering support for the
marketing department as well as completing the framework on our release
engineering processes. In a this sized company, I find myself wearing many
hats.
December 2005 - Sept 2007
PlanetiBiz Inc - Sr. PHP/Actionscript/Javascript Developer contracted to
Formula, Inc.
Developed software using PostgreSQL, MySQL, PHP and Action script -
Formula, Inc. - http://www.ie-formula.com (A PlanetiBiz Customer) is an
outsourced services company that provides media, art, animation and
programming for customers which are mostly in the movie and entertainment
business in Hollywood, CA. My job was to be a creative problem solver and
advise customers on which technologies to use, I would advise on design
functionality for custom software applications written for customers,
install and customize freeware PHP applications as well as working on
larger projects like DDD - http://www.dddcorp.com - where I was a part of a
2 man management / development team to tackle the task of converting their
COBOL encounter resolution system into a web based application written in
PHP and PostgreSQL. Due to the sensitive nature of this application, it was
important to adhere to strict HIPAA guidelines for security and encryption
of sensitive patient data.
October 1999 - Present
PlanetiBiz Inc, CEO
Managed day-to-day operations, developed web based software and maintained
search engine rankings for customers. PlanetiBiz was my first attempt at
having my own company. Our primary income came from the search engine
optimization portion of our business. We generated roughly $500,000 profits
per year for ourselves in advertising revenue and upwards of $5M in annual
revenues for our customers in the mortgage, debt settlement, insurance and
credit card businesses. We took our profits and focused it on developing
software for our customers. We created applications like debt lead manager
and mortgage lead manager which brought us additional revenues in software
licensing fees as well as helped our customers organized their data better,
which in-turn allowed them to make more money from better decisions We also
focused resources in a new project, Mealagent
– http://www.mealagent.com which is an on-line application that gives
restaurants the ability to 'do business' online. This is the best
alternative for restaurants that have an on-line presence but no means to
close business with their customers from the internet. This project
continues as on-going. Planeti.Biz, currently functions as an outsourced
CTO to a several customers.
March 1999 - October 1999
Engage Technologies, IT Director
Managed IT department. Windows and Linux environment. When I started
working for Engage Technologies, they recently acquired "Accipiter Inc"
which is well known for their software "Accipiter Ad Manager." I was
responsible for the decision making for all IT infrastructures in the
Raleigh, NC location. I managed the day-to-day operations of the IT
department and managed groups of contractors. In my time there I upgraded
all their server platforms (Windows and Linux) and had all systems speaking
together in a functional enterprise environment. I wrote an on-line
application in PHP for end-users to request real time help as well as
entering trouble tickets for their IT issues.
June 1998 - March 1999
State of North Carolina, Senior Data Networking Engineer (Contractor)
Traveled throughout different sites around North Carolina as part of the
state's Novell NDS technology upgrade project. I was one of 2 engineers
responsible for upgrading every server on the State's network. I worked out
of the Dorothy Dix campus in Raleigh, NC. Which I was 'docked' at home
base, I would assist with various web development tasks using Perl, PHP,
Shell scripting and some IPX networking programming.
February 1997 - June 1998
ABB, Senior Systems Administrator (Contractor)
I worked as a contractor for ABB as a Senior consultant for their Solaris
and Windows server platforms as well as trouble shooting and increasing the
performance of their Local area network. My programming experience also
allowed me to create several applications which lent themselves to system
administration and network management, that were used company-wide to help
automate tasks that were unnecessarily consuming 'people time'.
January 1997 - June 1997
IBM, Level 2 Windows Support (Contractor)
Provided level 2 windows support for a group in IBM that served as a front
line technical support team for a revision control product that was widely
used in the company. I was a great help to this group of people, which were
mostly accustom to OS2.
March 1996 - January 1997
MCI, Project Engineer III (Contractor)
Managed wide area networks for specific managed customers. The accounts
that I was responsible for were: American Express, Lear and Alcoa. My
responsibilities were to oversee and supervise the turn up of new networks
and routers of my customers and set them up to be monitored by the GMNC
(Global Network Management Center) using HP Openview and Tivoli. I would
also maintain documentation for each customer consisting of project notes,
data network diagrams and a log of important events. I communicated issues
between the customer and upper / mid-level management and par-took in many
meetings with the customer.
August 1995 - March 1996
McKinsey and Company, WAN Engineer (Contractor)
At McKinsey, I was a wide area network engineer working on Cisco and Bay
Network routers, I also tested new technologies that were being considered
for the McKinsey data network. These technologies consisted of, terminal
servers, security devices, new server operating systems to name a few. In
my time there, I implemented a SecureID token based security system which
was integrated with TACACS from a BSDI authentication server for employees
to access the company network from dial-up. This goal of this project was
to create the most secure means of accessing their network from the outside
world. This solution was the 'bleeding-edge' technology at the time, and
perhaps still is.
December 1994 - August 1996
Computers Unlimited, Data Network Service Technician
On-site data network installation and maintenance for Novell and Unix
networks. Installed and maintained Ethernet, Arcnet and Token-ring
networks.
Technical Portfolio:
S3Ninja ( http://s3ninja.wordpress.com/ ): A Linux based command line S3
client to provide a simple and robust way to add Amazon S3 storage
capabilities to web applications. Unlike most tools that are similar to
this, S3Ninja supports callback and forking, which is very important when
you want to transfer large files. This is currently what GetReel Health
uses on it's clustered production environment.
SEO Engine (Erosguide.com): Project based on Zend framework to handle
specialized content construction and dynamic link handling and content
presentation methods for over 3000 domains with layout customization.
Linkback Checker (Erosguide.com): A specialized php / zend framework
application designed to verify back links with advertisers and link
exchange partners. This system has special customizations to hook into our
back-end systems using SOAP, as well as an administrative and user front
end to manage and approve link all across our network.
Sales Lead Scraper (Erosguide.com): A data-mining tool designed to 'scrape'
valuable data from the internet, validate that data against our internal
systems, and organize the data into a functional data model to provide
reporting and trends.
Release Engineering / Software Lifecycle Project (Erosguide.com):
Engineered packaging and deployment methodology to manage environments and
distribute custom software across a 250+ node CentOS Linux environment
consisting of development, test, staging and production servers. This was a
large project consisting of:
. Packaging our PHP and Java software from source into RPM
. Maintaining multiple development and production yum repositories
. Management of SVN
. Automation of managing our system level environments
. Configuration management of custom PHP and JBoss applications in
multiple environments
. Establishing a PHP/Java continuous integration environment
. Creating mechanism for system engineering to package and deploy
changes using RPM and Yum.
. Defining release process, software lifecycle and standards for
developers to package and build.
. Implemented a database version control
. Configuration and unit testing
Internal PHP Applications for Erosguide.com:
RT - Rewrote ticketing system originally written in Perl. Ported to
Object Oriented PHP, JQuery, ExtJS. This was a huge win for the company due
to the fact that their current implementation of RT, which is an extremely
modified version of the open-source RT project was crippled and falling
down weekly.
CRM - Was project manager for CRM, fixed over 100+ bugs in Eventum,
stabilized the application in the respect that I made it build-able and
configurable in different environments in the service of being able to move
the code from dev -> test -> stage -> prod. This was not possible with CRM
for years due to the girth of spaghetti code.
Configuration / Environment Management System - I developed from the ground
up an easy to use but fairly sophisticated config / environment management
system using a combination of SVN, NFS, NIS, automounter and PHP-cli. In
addition I created a custom suite of linux command line tools to manage
this environment, push code, etc.. There was a huge need for such a
solution in our organization.
PhoCart ( http://www.phocart.com ): PHP web based application written
using Zend framework, Jquery with an Ajax implementation. The goal of this
project is to create a free shopping cart for the Internet community to
allow them to sell their own electronic / download-able goods with an open
source foundation to build on. The business goal is to create a successful
profit model for a truly open source product, similar to MySQL and
OpenNMS.
Encounter Resolution System, DDD Corp ( http://www.dddcorp.com )
Our project was to take COBOL based medical data and create a HIPPA
compliant, normalized RDBMS structure in PostgreSQL for use in a PHP web
application which is used by DDD's customers (such as HMO's) to reconcile
their medical billing data and act as a data warehousing application. I was
part of a two man team that was in charge of this large project. I
programmed and made fundamental design decisions. The project was started
in November 2005 and the software is now in production and used by hundreds
of health care providers.
Flash Digital Cable Set Application, Time Warner
( http://www.timewarnercable.com )
The development of a flash based digital cable box written completely in
Actionscript. It contained a channel guide, pay per view, video on demand,
change channels, settings screen and find shows screen to name a few. I
developed this application top to bottom without having any experience with
Flash or action script beforehand. I completed this project in about one to
two months working around the clock.
Mealagent, PlanetiBiz Inc ( http://www.mealagent.com )
Mealagent is a web application for restaurants to provide on-line ordering
for their customers. The big challenge here was to normalize a food order
for a RDBMS and create a simple enough interface for the public to
interface with it to build menus. I was the project manager and owner of
Mealagent. I did about 35% of the programming and 65% of the business
development. This project is on-going and has over 10,000 food ordering
customers.
Debt Lead Manager, PlanetiBiz, Inc. ( http://www.debtleadmanager.com )
"Debt Lead Manager" is a PHP Web application for debt management /
settlement companies to track incoming sales leads, measure performance and
ROI of the lead sources as well as the performance of their sales staff. I
was the project manager for this project and the owner of the company. This
was a very successful project due to the fact that it filled a big need for
debt settlement companies to manage their leads which they were spending so
much money on. This product is still being used by several large debt
settlement companies.
Email Monkey, PlanetiBiz Inc.
An internal tool designed to send very large e-mailings. This application
was originally written in Perl and was designed to be a multi-process mass
mailing tool to run on the Linux platform. Many of our customers needed the
ability to send out non-spam mass mailing to their customers which required
each mail to be individually formed. Eventually this code was integrated
directly into our lead manager and Mealagent products and no longer was
used stand-alone. I was the project manager for this.
Canned Chicken, Planetibiz Inc.
A web based application designed to serve content to search engines spiders
with the intention of gaining top rankings for particular words. The way
this application was designed and engineered was ingenious. It created
hundreds of thousands of dynamic pages, each containing very distinct
dynamic text all with distinct dynamic linking structures cross linked in a
complete mesh across however many external domains we defined. From the
outside perspective it appeared that the pages created with this tool were
like huge libraries of data. At first launch this software was a complete
success. We gained #1 rankings on Google for EVERY word we aimed for. This
got a great deal of attention from the internet community and was quickly
shot down since, by definition we were 'spamming'. It was a very
educational experience and a good opportunity to work on some good
mathematic code as well as a lucrative two months. Suffice it to say, our
SEO practices these days are 100% 'above board'. Doing things the right way
works well too!
Interests: I have always had a special interest in competitive, organized
multi-player gaming - WoW, TF2, RTCW... Although I don't have a lot of
time these days to play like I used to, I hope to help pioneer the
commercial aspect of on-line gaming. I love star trek. I enjoy being part
of the technology that will eventually allow us to travel light years
through outer space.
