My name is Gary Laney. I worked as engineer, chief engineer and manager at Sound Emporium Recording Studios (the original Jack Clements
Recording Studios) in Nashville, Tn from 1977-1995. I recorded and mixed albums for Trisha Yearwood, Keith Whitley, Don Williams, Texas
Tornados, Flaco Jimenez, REM, New Grass Revival, Al Kooper, Alan Jackson, Amazing Rhythm Aces, Jason and The Scorchers, Green on Red,
Tracy Nelson, Jamie O’Hara and Collin Raye to name a few. Around 1995 the recording business started to change for me in a way I did not like. I
didn’t like tuning up people and it seemed the songs & singers were getting worse. No substance!
I have always loved the recording process, I just got tired of the music business in general and the country music business in particular. To me it was
– if you can’t sing why are you in here? Fixing a few lines was fine but the auto tune and crap songs just drove me away.
I moved back to San Angelo, Tx. in 1995 to take care of my parents and to develop my skills as a metal and jewelry artist. After a number of tough
years my parents have moved on. After a few years I ran into some really good song writers and musicians. I bought myself a Pro Tools rig and
started recording them. I now have a small music publishing & record company and small recording studio.. I know I am 59 years old but I am a
young 59. My slow Texas drawl may make it seem like I am old or slow but I am full of energy and I am not ready to ride off into the sunset, sitting
on my couch watching television. I have started a recording studio at my house, a small indie record label, a music publishing company and a music
cooperative to try to place songs in film & tv during the last few years. I may not have a world class studio with the best mics, acoustics and console
but the records we have done sound pretty darn good and I have gotten airplay on our recordings on the PBS show Undercurrents and other radio
stations across the United States. Our recordings have played next to everyone from Willie Nelson to Black Keys and they have held up pretty well. I
have had to teach myself promotion to push the records as that is something I had never done before. If you would like to check out our records you
can go to www.palmwoodmusic.com . We also made two videos on the cheap but they are pretty good. Granted the quality is not as good as what
major labels do but I think we did pretty well. I had never made a video before. You can check the videos out at www.youtube.com/watch?
v=g8vPJJSpK-E or http://www.youtube.com/watchv=9KjmxHIGXwQ .
This past year I started a music cooperative with a friend of mine, David Alexander. We are trying to place songs in film & tv. If you would like to
check any of these songs out please go to www.soundcloud.com/10aciousmusic . All of these were recorded at my home studio.
I am very comfortable working under pressure and with all kinds of people. Having been a manager of Sound Emporium Recording Studios I
understand about budgeting, hiring and working with artists and the artist’s management. I also taught a jewelry making class at McMurry
University in Abilene, Tx. for 7 years. Even though I do not have a college degree I do have 18years experience making hit records and 35 overall
years in the audio business. I believe I would be an asset to your business.
