Quality Needles Pvt. Ltd, India May 2006 – Aug 2006

Engineering Intern

QNPL was incorporated in 1983 and is a manufacturer of suture surgical needles- a precision product. It produces 2000 different types

and sizes of surgical needles for a large number of diverse customers all over the world.

• Worked in Design & Quality Control Departments and got familiar with various operations of the Biomedical Industry.

• Worked in a team of six members for improving the penetration characteristics of suture needles.

ACADEMIC PROJECTS

Perfusion Studies in Bone Organ Culture: Aug. 2007-Aug. 2009

Analysis of requirements of bone perfusion apparatus

• Identified and ordered the required components used in perfusion apparatus e.g. specially designed bone perfusion

chamber, membrane oxygenator, bubble trap, heating coil, pump drive, pump head, water bath, media, manifolds, stands,

clamps, connectors and tubing.

Design, Analyses and Fabrication of Bone Perfusion Chamber (BPC)

• Proposed a novel design of BPC after comprehensive research on contemporary designs.

• Performed 2D sketching of BPC in AutoCAD and 3D solid modeling in SolidWorks.

• Utilized COSMOSFloWorks and ANSYS FLUENT for Fluid Flow Analyses.

• Optimized the BPC design by conducting parametric studies on design variants based on the results of fluid flow analyses.

Responsible for fluid calculations.

• Suggested a highly accurate Rapid Prototyping method, Stereolithography, for fabrication of BPC over conventional

machine shop techniques. Also estimated the cost of fabrication.

Set up, testing and troubleshooting of the entire perfusion apparatus

• Assembled entire setup to verify no-leakage condition and fixed leaks identified.

• Verified flow rates from pump with experimental flow rates and calibrated the pump when required.

• Validated the temperature of media reaching BPC and calibrated the temperature settings to compensate for

losses occurred while circulating through the tubing length.

Planning of experiments

• Conducted a comparative study on intent, system used, flow rate, flow regime and results of similar perfusion studies used

in bone research and proposed optimal parameters for the study.

Three Dimensional reconstruction of Pig Heart: Creating a 3D model of heart using SLI Aug. 2008- Feb. 2010

• Procured 12 scans of pig heart from different angles, in incremental steps of 30 degrees using Structured Light Illumination.

• Identified and utilized an algorithm, Scale Invariant Feature Transform (SIFT), for finding robust matching points between

consecutive scans and extracted 3D world coordinates corresponding to matching points using bilinear interpolation in

MATLAB.

• Identified and utilized a widely accepted method, Iterative Closest Point (ICP), for registration of 3D point clouds of different

scans to complete the entire 3D model which was then exported to a SolidWorks compatible format to perform finite element

analyses and study wave propagation.

Other Projects Aug. 2007- May 2008

• Finite Element Analysis of Involute Gear Profile: Performed structural analysis on involute spur gear profile to determine

tooth root bending stresses. Solid modeling and Finite Element Analyses were done in ANSYS.

• Design of External Pacemaker: Designed an external demand pacing and event logging device for management of acute

bradycardia. ECG data were acquired using WINDAQ and the digital logic was designed in LabView.

• QRS Detection in an ECG signal: Implemented Pan-Tompkins algorithm for detection of QRS complex in ECG signal.

Conducted power spectral analysis of ECG signals to distinguish between Ventricular Tachycardia and Ventricular Fibrillation.

Tools: MATLAB.

• Mathematical Modeling: Conducted mathematical modeling of Fitz Hugh Nagumo (FHN) model in MATLAB to study the

phenomenon of wave propagation in heart.

• Speech Recognition Program: Wrote a program for speech recognition with limited library of names. WINDAQ was used to

acquire speech samples and MATLAB was used for coding.

• Study on Muscle Hemodynamics: Investigated the distribution of flow, concentration and oxygenation of hemoglobin in the

upper limb muscles in healthy subjects at rest using near infrared Diffuse Correlation Spectroscopy (DCS). Tools: Doppler

vascular probe, cuff tourniquet, DCS machine, MATLAB.
