Research & Audit
2008 - present
I am currently leading three audit projects.
2003 - 2006
I was awarded a DM degree for research at the Institute of Musculoskeletal
Sciences, University of Oxford which analysed the cellular and humoral
mechanisms whereby melanoma, sarcoma and Staphylococcus aureus promote
human-osteoclast differentiation, osteoclast resorbing activity and
survival.
2002
I performed an audit to investigate plastic surgeons' perception of the
minimum standards of reporting of skin neoplasia at the time of publication
of the Royal College of Pathologists' guidelines. The results were
published in Br J Plast Surg in 2004 and showed that awareness of
substandard reporting was relatively poor across all grades and this was
correlated with a poor patient management. It highlighted that awareness of
the guidelines and increased understanding of basic pathology should
correct these weaknesses.
2000
I performed an audit comparing the effectiveness of two ablative procedures
for treating in-growing toenails at Victoria Infirmary, Glasgow. The
results were published in Scot Med J in 2005 and demonstrated that surgical
outcome and recurrence rates for phenol ablation and germinal matrix
excision performed by junior surgeons were similar to published figures. It
highlighted that phenol ablation is just as effective as germinal matrix
excision. This has altered clinical practice within the unit, where phenol
ablation is now the preferred treatment.
1995-1996
I pioneered and developed a computer-assisted learning package in exercise
physiology as basis of B. Med. Sci. (Hons) degree at the Department of
Physiology, University of Nottingham. This package was the first prototype
used by the University of Nottingham Medical School for teaching the
undergraduate curriculum.
Teaching Experience
Undergraduate
As an anatomy tutor at the Department of Human Anatomy, University
of Oxford, I prepared prosections used for teaching anatomy to medical
students, facilitated anatomy and histology sessions and supervised
research projects.
Postgraduate and Nursing/ allied medical professionals
I participate in the weekly educational program for junior surgical
residents teaching plastic surgery principles. I also supervise and teach
junior surgical residents surgical skills in the operating room on a daily
basis. I was involved with improving nursing knowledge on wound healing and
facial trauma through postgraduate workshops.
