Professional History

2003 - 2010 Solar Manufacturing, Inc., Souderton, PA

Design & Manufacture of Vacuum Heat Treating Furnaces

Mechanical Designer

* Design and Detail of Vacuum Furnace Operating Systems such as Vacuum

Pumping Systems, Gas Backfill-Partial Pressure Systems, Gas Cooling

System Layout, Cooling Water Systems, Pneumatic Systems, Power Terminal

Assemblies, and Equipment Arrangements for customer approval. Generated

complete Bills of Material and Purchase Order Requisitions for each

system.

* Project Engineer on (8) Car-Bottom Vacuum Heat Treating furnaces

ranging from $1.3 to $7 million, having workloads from 50,000 to 150,000

lbs., with max. operating temperatures of 2850 deg. F for delivery

worldwide. Coordinated outside contractors, consultants, mechanical &

electrical design engineers, in-house manufacturing, QC testing, field

installation and follow-up.

* Traveled to customers facilities to collect data needed to engineer

vacuum furnaces and hot zone rebuilds. Measured chamber diameters and

penetrations, power and utility requirements, type of operation and

temperature parameters. Formulated modernized designs which were

returned to customers for review and acceptance.

* Assisted in the formation of Solar Manufacturing Inc. by organizing an

Engineering Department, hiring qualified engineering personnel and

securing outside contractors, consultants and vendors. Established work

flow procedures & standards and assigned duties for delivery of projects

on or ahead of schedule and within budget.

1984 - 2003 Vacuum Furnace Systems, Inc., Souderton,

PA

Design & Manufacture of Vacuum Heat

Treating Furnaces

Mechanical Designer

* Served on a "Cost Reduction Committee" whose goal was to

manufacture a new vacuum furnace priced at 30% less than new.

Streamlined design techniques, materials used and reduced shop labor.

Achieved goal by building (3) vacuum furnaces which performed above

their designed expectations.

* Chaired a Value Engineering Committee of (6) to identify and

address problem areas between production and engineering. Effective

communication was established, appropriate production equipment was

purchased and more reliable products were manufactured.

* Redesigned various mechanical refractory items to new "standards"

as a result of extensive analysis of existing marginal designs.

Results proved successful in reduced cost and more reliable in

operation.

* Converted an existing internal plenumed furnace to a plenumless

furnace for improved quenching performance at customers' request. I

produced a redesign of the hot zone gas cooling flow pattern by

redirecting quench gas more efficiently. Customer reported a 20% -

30% decrease in cooling time.

* Designed a unique heating element feed-through support assembly in

response to a customer's request. Utilizing 12 years of hot zone

design knowledge at that time, I produced a sample assembly for

evaluation and production. Demonstrated my ability to produce a

patent worthy concept.

* Organized a Hot Zone Standardization Program to eliminate confusion

pertaining to overall sizes, dimensions, capacities, support

locations, etc. Originated a manual of standards and specifications

that was distributed company wide. Led to simplified proposals,

estimating and engineering time.

1983 - 1984 N. W. Controls Company, Harleysville, PA

Manufacturer of Push-Pull Control

Cables

Designer

* Designed tooling and production machinery, injection molds, custom

tool bits, redesigned existing molds into a "quick change" concept.

Managed life testing of new cable designs and troubleshooting.

1981 - 1983 Portescap Transicoil Inc., Worcester, PA

Manufacturer of Aircraft Control

Instrumentation

Junior Designer

* Detail of fiber optic displays, integrated switch panels and control

panels for aircraft instrumentation.

* Co-Designed, detailed and built an innovative Push Button Life Test

Machine for Quality Control Lab. Took Chief Engineers' concept and

translated it into a successful completion. Led to "in-house"

quantitative testing for the first time rather than using an outside

vendor.

1978 - 1981 Allen Shermann Hoff Company, Malvern, PA

Fossil Fuel Power Plant Equipment

Manufacturer

Senior Draftsman

* Design and detail of coal-ash handling conveyors, unloaders, hoppers,

chutes, bins, upgrade existing conveyor designs and valves, assisted in

design and detail of prototype bottom ash rotary unloader.

1969 - 1978 STV, Sanders and Thomas, Inc., Pottstown, PA

Consulting Engineers

Junior Draftsman, Draftsman, Senior

Draftsman

* Design and detail of various production machines, castings, detail of

process piping systems, HVAC detail, structural steel detail, design and

detail of paper making machine roll-drives and walkways.

Education: Penn State University, Berks Campus, Associate Degree in

Mechanical Engineering Technology

Veteran: US Army, Honorable Discharge
