Professional Experience
LEADING SCIENTIST EXPERIENCE IN A FORTUNE 500 COMPANY AND IN A HIGH-TECH,
FAST-GROWING SMALL BUSINESS.
Responsibilities including planning and implementing research program,
hands-on lab work, coordinating external support and assuring timely
delivery of results, creating and protecting intellectual properties,
keeping updated in technological trends and learning new concepts and
skills, supervising supporting scientists and technicians, present
technical data and make recommendations to business managers, and
providing technical counseling service to marketing, purchasing,
environmental, safety and legal departments.
< Senior Chemist, RedXDefense LLC, Maryland, 2010-present
Develop trace explosive and drug detection technologies based on
fluorescence chemistry. Design and optimize explosive detection systems,
integrating chemistry and engineering requirements. Seek extramural
funding (mainly from government) to support new product development
efforts. One current project is funded by Defense Advanced Research
Projects Agency (DARPA) of Department of Defense.
< Research Scientist, Weyerhaeuser Company, Washington, 2005 - 2010
Developed and commercialized 10+ adhesive and coating formulations based
on polyurethane, epoxy, phenolic and hot-melt systems and filed multiple
patent applications. Developed novel techniques to incorporate cellulose
fiber and nanocrystal cellulose into sheet molding compounding (SMC),
laminating, extrusion and pultrusion processes. Established research
partnership with Ford Motor Company and Ashland Chemical Company.
Developed technologies to replace petroleum based phenolic chemicals with
lignin (a natural polyphenolic chemical derived from bio-mass) and filed
multiple patent applications. Managed research projects using a "Phase-
Gate" process and scaled up the technology to full plant scale. Projects
contributed millions of dollars to the bottom line of the business.
Hands-on lab experience during PhD and ME degree study.
< Oregon State University, Oregon, 2001-2005
Designed and conducted multiple-step organic synthesis to make amino acid-
based adhesives. Synthesized terminally functionalized polyethylene.
Synthesized amide modified polypropylene using free radical graft co-
copolymerization.
< Zhejiang University, China, 1997-2000
Extracted bio-macromolecules (glucosan, chitosan and chitin) from fungal
cell wall. Modified bio-macromolecules through graft copolymerization
with vinyl monomers. Utilized modified bio-macromolecules as flocculant
in waste water treatment.
Sales experience in one of the largest exporting companies in China.
< Zhejiang Medicines & Health Products Imp & Exp Co., Ltd., China, 2000-
2001
Exported fine chemicals and pharmaceutical intermediates. Provided
technical support and drove customer satisfaction. Evaluated new business
opportunities and developed new customer relationships.
