SUMMARY
Experienced, innovative software engineer specializing in developing highly
configurable, reusable embedded, real-time and PC applications software for
a wide range of purposes. My methods have resulted in United States and
European patents. While the solutions are best used from the beginning on
new projects, I have also applied these techniques incrementally to improve
the flexibility, performance and reliability of legacy code. I have
designed and developed technical software in a research and development
environment requiring high levels of reliability and accuracy in order to
insure consumer safety and satisfaction. Core competencies:
. Analyzing customer needs and translating them into system requirements.
. Understanding and applying theories and paradigms to software design.
. Working competently in interdisciplinary circumstances to unite computing
technology with customer's environment.
. Learning new technologies to develop innovative solutions to problems in
a timely manner and at low cost.

PROFESSIONAL EXPERIENCE
Bayer HealthCare LLC - Mishawaka, IN 1990 - 2009
Staff Research and Development Engineer
. Designed and developed general purpose breadboard system to support the
development of an electrochemical algorithm to detect blood glucose
levels. The general purpose breadboard system consisted of embedded blood
glucose meter software for controlling the chemistry and recording analog-
to-digital measurements and Microsoft Windows Visual C++ meter
configuration and data collection software. The embedded/PC system
allowed for the quick development and verification of new ideas and
seamless translation from research to new products.
. Designed and developed embedded system to measure background currents in
solutions from manufacturer supplier prior to shipment to Bayer for use in
product research and development.
. Worked on design of a "Multi-Rate Cyclic Executive with Interrupt Service
Routines and Deferred Service Routines" to support a general purpose
embedded system software platform for blood glucose measurement consumer
products. Designed to support precision, low-power, low cost portable
instrumentation.
. Project and Technical Software Lead in the design and development of
embedded system and PC data management software for use in medical
environments. Developed in all phases of the software life cycle
(requirements, specification, design, implementation, testing, and
maintenance) on NEC K0 family 8-bit and Texas Instruments TMS370 8-bit
microcontrollers and Windows and Palm Pilot platforms. Evaluated technical
feasibility, general design directions, cost and performance
considerations and project features with respect to business needs.
. Served as core team member and principal technical lead in the
development of new diabetes management products. Key focus on the
definition of product requirements, software architecture, system
integration, validation, risk management and process development. Worked
with multidisciplinary team members to manage the interfaces between
product subsystems to create a high quality, robust product with minimal
problems as product transitioned into production. Coordinated the tasks of
research and development with marketing, manufacturing, packaging and
labeling, customer service, sales and quality assurance departments to
ensure the successful and timely release of embedded and PC data
management software products. Championed efforts to identify and leverage
technical commonality between projects and reuse of parts/architectures to
expedite product development thus minimizing final product costs and
resource requirements.
. Defined SAP data structure to support Project System, Product Software
and Fixture Data.
. Completed training courses in object-oriented software design and
implementation, software engineering, and embedded software development
and testing, human factors, Capability Maturity Model for Software
(CMM), Palm OS programming, Unified Modeling Language (UML ).
Hewlett-Packard - Waltham, MA 1983 - 1989
Software Development Engineer
. Designed and developed data management software in a research and
development laboratory within the Medical Products Group in all phases of
software life cycle on UNIX, MSDOS and Hewlett-Packard operating systems
in numerous languages (e.g., C++, C, Pascal, FORTRAN, BASIC and
assembler).
. Designed and implemented run-time support tools -- a library of object-
oriented "Generic Collection Classes".
. Developed object-oriented data model that interfaces to a standard
relational database; the fundamental objective for the model was to
provide a reliable repository for persistent shared objects by maintaining
data integrity, reliable applications and configurability.
. Produced human-interface support tools for use by applications (e.g.,
graphic printer, video and touch drivers).
INTELLECTUAL PROPERTY
. "Table-Driven Test Sequence" application pending
. "System, Method and Biosensor Apparatus for Data Communications with a
Personal Data Assistant" US Patent 6,604,050 B2
. "Method and Apparatus for Making Predetermined Events with a Biosensor"
US Patent 5,665,215
AWARDS
. Bayer Diagnostics Leadership Team Standards of Excellence Award for
Ascensia Software Development
. Outstanding Service in support of the process redesign, training and
information reporting of the SAP implementations.
