RODALE INC., New York, New York
Rodale is a $700 million global, multi-platform Media Company centered on
healthy, active living; Brands include Men's Health (MH), Prevention (PVN),
Runner's World, Women's Health (WH), Bicycling, etc. Reporting to the CEO,
responsible for Human Resources and Employee Services (Legal, Marketing
Research, Facilities, Office Services, Food Service Operations, Fitness
Center, and Child Care Center). Coordinated Corporate strategic planning
efforts for three-year operating plans.
. Along with Senior Management, transformed the company from a slow-
moving, mediocre talent organization to a high-performing, productive
culture that attracted top talent across all disciplines. Focused on
four priorities: 1) New products, building multi-brand extensions of
MH and PVN; 2) Grow online, including audience, ad sales and
eCommerce; 3) expand international, focusing online and WH as key
levers for growth; 4) aggressive cost management.
. Moved the business from a domestic-focus to an international design
through licensing brands in over 40 countries and setting up five
JV's. New investments included the launch of Women's Health, Organic
Style, Children's Health and Best Life brands.
. Merged advertising into an integrated marketing design where
Publishers could sell across brands in print, online and subscription
sites. Online business grew from zero to $30M in two years.
. Shifted resources to support online businesses at the expense of
traditional print and direct mail. Rodale's core assets, and
competitive advantage, are its brands, editorial content and customer
marketing capabilities. These were monetized through ad sales and
increasingly through direct sales as well as retail sales globally.
Focused on product development through more profitable in-house brands
leveraging Men's Health, Runner's World and Prevention titles.
. Designed and implemented a Total Rewards Strategy, which best
leveraged compensation spent on recruiting and retention for "Top 100"
employees. This included designing and implementing a new Sales
Incentive Plan, Management Incentive Plan, Long Term Incentive Plan,
and a Profit Sharing Plan for Shareholders.
. Realigned the magazine and book businesses into a brand/content
strategy to provide a "single voice" to our customers and grow
revenues through market leadership in a highly competitive landscape.
Overhauled the book trade business and produced over 15 NYT Best-
Selling titles including South Beach Diet, An Inconvenient Truth (Al
Gore), Flat Belly Diet, Eat This Not That, End of Overeating.
. Moved the company to a vendor management strategy through outsourcing
customer service, IT, HRIS, and Accounts Payable.
