SUMMARY
Senior Mechanical Design Engineer with MBA and 13 years experience in
mechanical engineering design and supplier management. Proven innovator in
areas of solid modeling design, injection molding and sheet metal design,
design for manufacture, problem solving, and product qualification. Strong
leadership abilities as Team Lead in mechanical development project.
Respected team player with strengths in areas of communication, needs
assessment, and organization.
PROFESSIONAL EXPERIENCE
ATK CORPORATION, Promontory, UT 2008 -
Present
Lead integration design engineer over Aft Assembly design and mechanical
stacking operation on NASA's Ares I and Ares I-X solid rocket boosters.
Ares I-X test rocket launched successfully October, 2009.
Maintained System Interconnect Diagram using MS Visio. Coordinated with
Avionics, Deceleration, Thrust Vector Control and Pyrotechnics design
teams and presented design changes to senior level project team.
Analyzed Forward Dome D-seal design for potential flaws through
coordination with test groups, design teams, and subcontractors. Compiled
data to formulate a recommendation, then successfully presented
recommendation to NASA technical board.
Assisted in design of cable routing fasteners and brackets for Ares I-X
booster using 3-D modeling (SDRC I-DEAS, UGS NX6.0, and Teamcenter 2007
Lifecycle Visualization).
Developed departmental procedure for managing interface controls between
ATK and its customers and subcomponent suppliers.
IOMEGA CORPORATION, Roy, UT 1996 -
2008
. Designed and developed 50+ plastic injection molded/sheet metal parts for
multiple high capacity disk drives using 3D modeling (Pro-Engineer
Wildfire 3.0, SDRC I-DEAS).
. Analyzed components using design for manufacture, six sigma, FEA, and
statistical process control.
Performed failure analysis where necessary during ramp-up production to
assure quality.
Designed Head Stack Assemblies (HSA) and Voice Coil Motors (VCM) for three
hard disk drive applications. Resulted in three successful product
launches.
Managed supplier relationship with overseas subcomponent suppliers for six
years spanning four projects. Instrumental in maintaining excellent
relationship during period of return to profitability.
. Coordinated development effort between internal Head/Media engineering
team and overseas subcomponent suppliers throughout development process
for HSA, Suspension Assembly, and VCM. Visited suppliers and
manufacturing partners in China and Southeast Asia periodically to
resolve design issues and supplier concerns and to foster good relations.
. Performed shock and vibration product testing. Used vibration test
equipment to optimize balance of Actuator HSA, thus allowing next
generation HDD application to meet product specifications.
. Designed electrical flex circuit layout and structure for three
development programs. Worked with electrical team and multiple suppliers
to manage design through to completion and successful production.
. Worked as mechanical design team lead on development project with highly
accelerated development schedule (HipZip MP3 player, 2000). Successfully
launched product within four month development cycle (concept to
production). Project awarded USA Today Quality Cup Award.
. Investigated and managed urgent implementation of Circuit Integrated
Suspension (CIS) technology after short supplier notice of impending
component end of life. Successfully implemented replacement within time
constraints to prevent stop ship.
. Consulted with Director and Vice President of R&D in selection of new
hire candidates.
. Supported supplier selection process, drafting effort, manufacturability
issues, and assembly concerns throughout development process.
EIMCO PEC, Salt Lake City, UT
1994 - 1996
. Student Engineer/Engineering Order Manager.
. Created engineering drawings and parts lists for over 20 municipal water
treatment projects using 2D CAD (ME 10) and MS Excel.
. Communicated daily with fabricators/suppliers to obtain product
information and assure product quality.
. Managed $15,000 - $75,000 water treatment equipment projects throughout
the design stage.
LUCAS AEROSPACE, Park City, UT April -
July 1994
. CO-OP Consultant: Cad Based Tool Design.
. Designed over 15 custom tools for use in manufacture and testing of
aircraft gearboxes.
