Professional Experience

Chemical Process Design Engineer / Consultant (engineer levels 4 to 5)

2006 - 2010

Worked through Foth, AMEC, and Aerotek for their clients, including

projects for: 3M (US & Korea), Cargill (Canada and England), Kraft Foods,

Proctor & Gamble (Canada), Esso / Kearl (Canada),

North Prairie Productions (biodiesel in Wisconsin), and Cobalt Biofuels

(bio-butanol in California).

( Redesigned biodiesel plant layout and saved over 18,000 feet of pipe,

segregated truck drivers from

the chemical plant, re-routed solvent vents to boiler, setup LDAR and

got EPA permit in only 73 days.

( Redesigned bio-butanol process to optimize heat recovery from hydrolysis

and distillation, re-routed

solvent vents to boiler as fuel, cut cooling water by 51%, cut CO2

process emissions by ~49%, and

changed paper mill add-on process from ~energy neutral to creating >80%

more energy than it uses.

( Identified limitations of technology in 3M's glass milling project and

added recycle to meet goals.

( QC checks of engineers work for designs, pipeline, & relief system

sizing for US, UK, & Canada.

( Reviewed technology supplier's design, identified flaws, and worked with

them to resolve problems.

( Modeled processes in excel and aspen, interpreted simulation results,

and optimized designs. Set up

screening criteria for solvents for extraction of biofuels from

fermentation broths & modeled in aspen.

Process Engineer, Salesman, and Marketing Consultant

2004 - 2006

Biorefining, Inc. - (a start-up company and

technology supplier to ethanol industry.)

Evaluations of: biodiesel, biomass-to-syngas-to-ethanol, membrane, and

fermentation processes. Analysis of: patent positions and business

opportunities. Sales. Wrote biodiesel business plan for LLC.

Entrepreneur / Product Design Engineer / Inventor / & Marketer

2002 - 2004

HSHT Venture,

Invented, designed, built, and tested prototypes. Business opportunity and

patent position evaluation.

Process Development Engineering Specialist (engineer levels 3 to 4).

3M 1997 - 2002

Process scale-up, development, and transfer of technology for pilot scale

synthesis, extraction, and purification of specialty and flammable

chemicals including monomers for low Tg polymers, imidates, fuel cells,

nitrile-vinyl ether, gases, catalysts, PFOA, Diols, glycidyl azide polymer,

and fluoro-alkanes. Project management of process development. Identified

process data for PhD chemists to collect to enable process optimization.

Directed union operators to make new products. Followed PSM.

( Authored procedures, schedule, and oversaw 90+ chemical runs at pilot

plant and 2 factories.

( Increased MV31 yield by 65% and tripled throughput. Sales in 2008 of

elastomer were~$53MM.

( Set up financial analysis of capital and operating costs for new

processes being developed.

( Modeled and optimized distillation, reactions, vacuum drying,

polymerization, and evaporators.

( Ran lab experiments, modeled, and redesigned process for fuel cell

monomer and NVE cross-

linker that increased yield by 105% and 80%, respectively, then

tons per year. Invention

earned 3M corporate level Inventive Engineering award and saved over

$2MM.per year.

( Changed researchers focus from: "can we make it" to "let's optimize

the process, insure the process

always meets product specs, add recycle streams, recover energy &

solvents, and cut capital".
