PROFILE Product Development Engineer experienced in plastics properties and
processing, experimental design, and material science. Assesses the
technical needs of new markets by combining customer and market
data with experimentation and analysis. Guides products from
concept through early sales as part of a cross-functional team.
PROFESSIONAL GENERAL MOTORS - Fuel Cell Activities, Honeoye Falls NY
EXPERIENCE 2007-2009
Senior Materials Engineer
First responder for material selection, qualification, and failure
analysis supporting air intake, fuel delivery, and coolant
subsystem components of the fuel cell power module. Consulted for
design teams and component suppliers on material choices.
Coordinated with material experts to resolve issues quickly.
Managed material analysis of component contaminants that could
degrade fuel cell performance. Goal was to replace electrochemical
testing with simpler wet chemistry techniques for material
screening.
Taught suppliers and automotive materials engineers the material
property needs of fuel cell components to spur ideas for new
material choices.
BEMIS Adhesive Films and Coatings, Shirley MA
1999 - 2006
Product Development Engineer
Principal technical expert for Technical Outerwear market focused
on seam tapes, textile adhesives, and bonded garment construction
techniques. Guided products from concept through product and
process development, product launch and product support.
Coordinated with Marketing, Manufacturing, and Quality to create
robust products. Engaged customers in hands-on technical
discussions.
Created a family of tapes for stitch free garment construction.
Value added products make garments with improved fit, function, and
new design capability. This new market generated over $1 million
sales in its first year.
Designed soft, premium seam tape and low cost seam tape that is
price competitive with Asian suppliers. An expanded product
offering allowed this market to grow from $6 million to $15 million
in the past 5 years.
Developed tapes for high end garments that filled a 20-year gap in
the product portfolio. This $2.5 million product line has the
potential to double in 5 years.
Formulated flexible nylon adhesive for athletic lettering film.
This strategic product was essential in securing a related $5
million product line.
Conducted production trials on manufacturing equipment.
CABOT Corporation, Billerica MA
1986 - 1999
Product Development Engineer (1996 - 1999)
Lead applications expert in an international product team
developing surface modified carbons for plastics. Translated
customer requirements into product properties and designed
appropriate testing. Reported results to customers and peers.
Managed laboratory technicians in their daily duties.
Developed surface modified carbon for rubber-modified polymers
that could be dispersed with no masterbatch step. The resulting
patent teaches a potential new family of products.
Profiled the conductivity of carbon compounds. Analysis revealed
the limits of existing products and a potential to use carbon
nanotubes in this market.
Plastics Research Technologist (1992 - 1996)
Investigated the effects of pigment morphology and dispersion in
polyolefins and engineering plastics. Designed experiments and
reported results to the technical community. Developed and
documented standard operating procedures.
Profiled the UV weathering of carbon in polyethylene. Resulted in
a new product, expanded sales tools, and improved understanding of
weathering.
Developed automated image analysis to evaluate dispersion quality
in plastics.
Ink & Coatings Research Technologist (1989 - 1992)
Formulated and tested inks and coatings for print and automotive
markets.
Tire Research Technologist (1986 - 1989)
Formulated and tested rubber compounds for tire and industrial
rubber markets.
