The City of Mesquite provided a wide range of opportunities and challenges

in all aspects of Data Processing. In five years, the city evolved from a

mainframe (UNISYS) Cobol and RPG II, no network environment to a full

campus WAN (eleven remote locations) Unix based environment.

Process included defining, selecting, installing, configuring and managing

Motorola Unix Servers (AT&T System V), a 600 user WAN (AT&T Starlan with

routers, bridges and FC interfaces) for all city applications and

connectivity. Several software development environments such as Oracle,

Informix, Unify and Progress were evaluated. Stand alone software packages

provided immediate services for secondary departmental needs were tested

and selected. Included development of standard review process and

developing working relationships with independent vendors overseeing

installation and customization of third party packages. As Senior

Business/Procedure Analyst, provided direction and assistance to Project

Managers, programmers and trainers in documentation, development and

implementation processes. Duties also included data modeling and

normalization processes during development of all city databases. Wrote new

applications using Progress RDBM. Process represented full life cycle
