WORK EXPERIENCE
Short - term, Senior Mechanical Engineer consulting projects.
07/2008 -- Present
Pelikan Technologies, Palo Alto, California 04/2007 - 07/2008
Senior Mechanical Engineer
Expanding present mechanism design for Pelikan Sun Lancing device to
improve reliability and operation. Designed and developed mechanical parts
and small mechanisms for seamless medical devices measurement solutions for
the diabetic's daily self monitoring process. Establishing a scientific
knowledge base for understanding the mechanism and optimizing performance.
Developed and designed fixturing for high volume production. Worked with a
variety of external design and manufacturing partners to ensure a
successful product launch.
iScience Interventional, Menlo Park, California 10/2005 - 2/2007
Senior Mechanical Engineer
Designed and developed mechanical parts used in Ultrasound Hand Held
Imaging Device for eye scanning. The parts included, but not limited to,
Enclosure, Chassis assembly, Housing and Imaging Cap. Performed tolerance
analysis and FMEA. Released all parts, drawing and procedures to
manufacturing.
Designed and developed quick-connect Fiber Optic connector for Laser based
micro-illumination system.
Affymetrix, Central Expressway, Santa Clara, California 5/2005 - 10/2005
Contract Position
Designed and developed new electromechanical systems used in next
generation Gene Chip (DNA) Flow Cell wafer synthesis process in the Reagent
Delivery Unit.
Redesigned Flow Cell on MOS to support experimentation on round silicon
wafers.
The Flow Cell is connected to the Affymetrix Supply and Control module.
Genesis Medical Interventional, Inc., Redwood City, California
11/2004 - 3/2005
Contract Position
Research and Development of Catheter for delivery of approved therapy in
the arterial system. Nitinol Wire braiding, cleaning, dipping. Braider Set-
up and use. Heat setting process and strength bond testing.
Thermo Electron, San Jose, California Liquid Chromatography Division
12/1996 - 06/2003
Senior Mechanical Engineer - Research and Development
. Modularized the Surveyor system, a liquid chromatography instrument, by
designing the chassis for each of its three modules, its drainage system,
and its solvent bottle platform.
. Developed a lower cost mechanical model of the Surveyor AutoSampler Lite,
vs. more expensive Surveyor AutoSampler system.
. Eliminated field reliability problem by extensively re-engineering the
Surveyor AutoSampler.
. The redesigned system employs an improved XYZ arm mechanism that is
highly tolerant of injection molding tolerances.
Abbott Laboratories, Mountain View, California Hospital Products Division
02/1991 - 12/1996
Member of Technical Staff - Product Development
. Reduced the production costs by 25% for the Patient Controlled Analgesia
(PCA) mechanism and a three-channel drug delivery pump by redesigning
their chassis. This project included machined model prototyping and
developing an injection molded production version.
. Designed and developed an innovative drug mixing compounder to help
hospitals reduce the cost of post surgical intravenous medications by
simplifying their preparation and storage. The system included a pressure
sensor, ten drug reservoirs, a solenoid activated control valve, a
control keypad, and a computerized database.
. Designed and built assembly fixtures that reduced the manufacturing
failure rate by 50% for products that required precision alignment.
. Ensured the ruggedness and reliability of Abbot's infusion pumps by
designing and implementing the life testing protocols for their critical
components.
Stryker Corporation, San Jose, California Endoscopy Division 10/1988 -
02/1991
Mechanical Engineer - Research and Development
. Patented two mechanical designs: a spring activated locking sleeve for an
endoscope and a disposable surgical cutter for arthroscopic procedures.
Both of these devices are still in production.
. Coordinated engineering and manufacturing efforts for multiple new
products. Conducted design reviews with external customers and internal
project teams to resolve potential design and manufacturing issues.
Produced the documentation required to transfer the products from the
development stage to the manufacturing floor. This included drafting the
assembly drawings, writing the manufacturing procedures, creating the
bills of material, and processing engineering change orders.
