I. Kappa Increase Project Lead - Conducted initial study to increase Pulp
Mill Kappa target from 95 to 115 and % Yield from 61% to 66%; Project
provides flexibility to the mill by either reducing weak liquor usage
(cost decrease) or increasing mill production (profit increase); First
Scenario (reduction in weak liquor usage) leads to annual cost savings
of $ 2.6 million; Second Scenario (production increase) leads to annual
profit increase of $ 11 million; Project requires installation of a
rejects refiner & screen in the Pulp Mill; Calculated project ROI &
payback period; Successful implementation will place mill within the
higher end of the industry spectrum in Kappa & Yield %
II. Pre-Evaporation Project Lead - Project recovers wasted heat from the
blow heat accumulator for steam usage on the Pre-Evaporators; Created
mass & heat balances for the Evaporators & Recovery Boiler; Conducted
trials on Washer lines & calculated Recovery Boiler & Washer
efficiencies; Performed project cost justification analysis by
calculating project ROI & payback period; Leads to $3.9 million in
annual plant cost savings; Also leads to increased Recovery Boiler
efficiency (burning higher solids %), increased Washer efficiency,
decrease in chemical costs, increased black liquor solids from the
washers & increase in number of digester blows
Other Job Functions:
. Collaborated with the Engineering Management team to focus on cost
savings projects . Worked on plant process economics, project
feasibility & valuation; evaluated future capital projects . Developed
a basic understanding of major quality issues faced by the company and
collaborated with the Quality team to reduce quality issues & maintain
high quality standards . Learned the fundamentals of Tiny TERM,
Crystal, & Capstone software applications & utilized them for customer
account handling, process monitoring, and quality reports

I. Soda Loss from Pulp Washers Project Lead - Project was used to
determine washing efficiency; Conducted Soda loss washing trial over 2
month period; Collected pulp samples from Washers and conducted Soda
loss experiment; Correlated Soda loss with wash water conductivities,
stock flow rate, shower water flow rate, & mill steam rates; Analyzed &
presented experimental results; Trained operators on experimental
procedure; Soda loss data used for possible addition of a brown stock
washing stage or a completely new washing line
II. L & W Fiber Analyzer Project Lead - Measured fiber properties such as
fiber lengths, widths, shape, blend, curliness, coarseness, kinks, &
fines %; Used to study refining effects on fiber properties; Primary
usage in the secondary or recycle fiber area for medium grade runs
III. TECO In-Line Freeness Tester Project Lead - Involved in equipment
installation, operating procedures, calibration, usability, &
maintenance; Monitored freeness results on a daily basis; Trained
operators on usage & maintenance procedures; Primarily used for base
freeness tracking on the Paper Machine
IV. Score Cracking Quality Issue - Integral member of Quality team to
troubleshoot major quality issue; Ran refining trials to correlate
amount of refining to score cracking; Created trends and compiled
machine variable data from periods with no score cracking and compared
to periods with significant score cracking issues; Monitored other
variables related to score cracking such as sheet moisture, caliper,
starch content, & sheet formation; Helped detect major sources of the
problem and reduced number of customer score cracking quality
