Dear Sir or Madam,
Since earning a Bachelor's in Computer Science from the University of
Texas, I have gained experience with all phases of software projects and
aspects of database management, OS support and storage and server room
configuration. This includes but is not limited to requirements, analysis,
design, coding, testing of applications; and production and development
database logical and physical design and administration, storage
configuration and monitoring; and even doing load balancing and racking
UPSs and servers. I have worked with a variety of hardware and operating
systems, and with many programming languages and DBMSs.
At every job, I have earned appreciation from Lead Developers for being
service oriented, and from Management for being proactive on the production
servers, and from Project Managers for tackling the hard projects by
learning and doing what is necessary to complete them on schedule. I enjoy
all aspects of DBA work and I am always interested in learning new skills
and taking on new challenges. I believe my resume shows I am flexible and
have steadily progressed in my career. I have been in the hiring and
training position as well, and believe that aptitude and attitude are more
important than a perfect skills match, and I have a plethora of each!
My resume is a little long because I believe it helps everyone to get
specific on my experience up front since I have a lot of it, but hopefully
it's organized so you can also scan for highlights and keywords.
I recently added Database Web Development using HTML/ASP/SQL Server,
Failover Clustering on SQL Server, Visual Basic development, and some
Teradata experience. I have also become a security analyst and implementer
for networks, database applications and web sites. I also recently
performed two hardware migrations for SQL Server Database Servers, one was
for our clustered production servers using PowerPath for HBA failover to
the SAN, Navisphere for SAN Configuration, and Command Line Interface
through Fabric View to do zoning on Brocade Switches to SAN.
Personal and job references and more information are available at your
request. Thank you for taking the time to consider me.
Sincerely,
Rod Merritt

PROFESSIONAL EXPERIENCE
June 1, 2010 - Present * Sapphire Consultant on Bench Time
Updating Skills at home.
. Developing with Visual Studio 2008 VB against a SQL Server 2008 backend
running on Windows 7. Imported a VB 6 project and built the test database
and the app runs on my laptop.
. Configured laptop as IIS Server and porting asp to asp.net for my largest
web site and have it partially running against SQL Server as well.
. Downloaded and installed Oracle 11g on my laptop running Windows 7 64
bit.
. Configured Oracle 11g security using Administration Assistant for
Windows, built a database using Database Administration Assistant.
. I am going through online tutorials and using Oracle's Database Control
interface to create objects in, monitor, and execute SQL commands against
the installed sample database and my own database.
August 1, 2000 - May 30, 2010 * Sapphire Tech Consultant at Tx Dept of
Health, Austin
Development and Production DBA on SQL Server, Web Developer, Security, MS
Clustering, SAN config and Zoning, Windows Support. SQL Server DBA on many
Win2K Advanced servers used for development, testing and production, and a
web server. Environment is batch processing and reporting as well as
transaction processing, supporting thousands of remote users. I also am a
Web developer and security analyst. System processes almost 3 million
dollars a day and supports over 1 million clients in Texas.
. Performed all the usual production DBA tasks like monitoring,
troubleshooting blocking and performance hits, creating physical objects,
permissions, producing audit and performance reports and automating them
for email delivery to management, setting up linked servers between SQL
Servers and with MS Access, installing new versions and patches, updating
virus defs, testing and updating Cluster Service to keep servers in sync
and make sure it still worked, monitor news for new viruses and attacks
to take preventive measures before they can attack us - one time I
proactively changed the SQL Server protocol to use named pipes instead of
tcp/ip to keep us up when all other agencies went down to thwart the
Slammer worm, move databases between servers, writing SQL Scripts as
needed to automate processes - like when a Clinic loses all its data my
script and procs will rebuild the entire clinic from data stored at the
State level using existing communications and processes therefore not
requiring any other new processes or procedures, creating and documenting
reboot procedures for servers and maintenance window schedules, producing
data comparison reports for dev and prod in order to sync them up.
. Used Visio to build a Data Flow Diagram to map intra-server and inter-
server data movement for WIC automation system from field through state
systems.
. Developed and implemented automated backup and recovery jobs, and
produced capacity and maintenance plans.
. Wrote DTS Scripts to transform and transfer data, from Foxpro tables to
SQL Server, and from transaction server to batch servers.
. Created data dictionary of WIC databases.
. Worked with over 30 developers on transformations, table definitions,
transaction control and Transact SQL. Wrote stored procedures for
implementing business rules for WIC/EBT Application.
. Redid physical design of WIC Database to allow table level recovery using
an automated script that read system catalogs and dropped and recreated
keys and moved the data.
. Configured SQL Server error detection and notification through SQL Mail.
. Monitored SQL Server, Windows, Network and SAN and tuned all for
performance.
. Gathered requirements and wrote stored procedures for all Client
Transfers within Texas, processing over a thousand per day for several
years. Maintained this code for changes to business rules as needed.
. Created and tested fallback plan and performed upgrade to SQL Server 7-
sp3. Then migrated developers from NT/SQL7 to WIN2K/SQL2000 in a failover
configuration on two 8-way servers. Also performed several moves to new
hardware, new OS, new SAN.
. Produced requirements through implementation for a National USDA Web Site
assigned to TDH for a UPC Database. I did everything - Determined user
requirements and business rules, planned IT architecture for server
hardware and software, programmed web application code, did database
design and implementation, installed IIS and configured it and wrote data
conversion scripts for ETL (Extract, Transform and Load). Secured
application against attack on many levels including configuring the
FireWall. This app was never successfully attacked in 2 years with many
attempts from around the world. USDA picked up code and database.
. Created a Web Site for Order Tracking between WIC Clinics and Food
Vendors using XML to COM Objects (written by teammate) with secure login.
Installed and configured the WEB Server IIS.
. Wrote and maintained Visual Basic utility pgm which hit the State
databases to enable our Help Desk to vastly decrease response time to our
clients, using Visual Studio 6.
. Lost our Teradata DBA, so I set up the user data and catalog backup jobs
on Teradata 4475 through NetVault.
. For migration of a SQL Server 2000 Production Server to new hardware, I
installed SQL Server 2000, moved and restored all database objects and
IDs and ODBC Data Sources, swapped static/DHCP IP Addresses, and updated
our Master DNS to point to new hardware still using old Server Name. This
achieved seamless, transparent migration without involvement from the
developers.
. For a later migration to new production hardware cluster, I personally
installed and configured new clustered database servers, including MS
Clustering Service, EMC PowerPath Failover Management, HBA Device
Drivers, Zoning on Brocade Gigabit Switches, Used Navisphere for SAN
LUN/Storage Group Configuration, SQL Server 2000, ODBC Drivers, ODBC
DataSources using registry export/import, assigning static IP Addresses,
configured private and public NICs, and set up SQL Mail with an SMTP
Exchange Profile.
. When DSHS moved to a new building, the contractors did a horrible job
with power distribution, causing server failures from overloaded circuits
and UPSs. I did power calculations with load balancing and redundancy
across circuits and across UPSs for all power in server room, then racked
the new UPSs and wired all power, we never had another problem, and
during city power outages I had time to bring things down gracefully
before the UPSs gave out.
. Briefly supported a few DSHS Web sites using DreamWeaver against local
development and remote production Web Servers.
. Installed and converted SQL Servers and Clients from 2000 to 2005,
supported and performance tuned several 2005 servers.
. Set up transactional and snapshot replication between SQL 2K and SQL 2005
production servers.
. Projected all hardware and software (except switches) with capacity
planning and costs for development, test and production servers for AARA
grant.
. Since we were pushing old hardware/software past its limit, I did a lot
of Windows and SQL Server performance tuning and worked with developers
to change their code. Some reports and data aggregation programs would no
longer run in their windows so I was able to modify the database and code
to run in a few minutes instead of 3 to 10 hours for a few of them.
. Drove the requirements for purchasing and configuring the LUNs on a new
SAN.
. Used Dell Server Administrator to rig an email alert for the server room
A/C becoming overloaded by using a server incoming air temperature probe
and checking when it is out of bounds.
. Interviewed many applicants, wrote job requirements and interview
questions and employment test, hired and trained my replacement full time
State employee for two years.
