the team (India / Atlanta). Developing and Modifying the schema, xml policy
and the xsl. Writing java swing plug-in to add additional features on the
GUI.
Chinese and Japanese Localization of Proventia-M :
Responsibility:
Developed parser for i18n process that involves following major steps:
Strings extraction from the source
Marking the extracted strings in source code
Creation of POT, PO and MO files
Modification of source code to enable i18n
String extraction from the source
Objective of this activity is to extract all displayable strings from the
source into a template file which can be handed to the translation teams.
The template file is called a POT (Portable Object Template) file and has
an extension of .pot
Benefit of creating a template file (POT) is that it can be handed over to
translation teams which can be working from geographically different
locations. For example, Hindi translators working from India would receive
the same POT file as Japanese translators in Japan - but the outputs would
be different and would contain the translations in related language.
Marking the extracted strings in source code
Once all the displayable strings have been extracted from the source, these
strings also need to be marked in the source so that when i18n is in
effect, the respective translation for that string can be fetched at
runtime and displayed on the UI. This "marking" is generally a function
call in most of the programming languages.
Creation of POT, PO and MO files
POT Files
As explained above, POT is the template file which contains all the
extracted strings from the source code. It is the first output of i18n
process.
Example contents of POT file
#: translation.php:5
msgid "This is the original string that needs tranlsation"
msgstr ""
msgid is the extracted string while msgstr is the (to be filled by
translator) placeholder for the translation of msgid string. POT files
contain an empty msgstr (as POT files are just templates).
PO Files
The result of translations using a POT file is a PO file. PO files are
created by each translation team (ie. for each language) by adding the
language translation of msgid's into msgstr's. Generally, the PO files have
UTF-8 encoding (though the encoding is governed by the target language).
Example contents of PO file
#: translation.php:5
msgid "This is the original string that needs translations "
msgstr
The empty msgstr in POT file has now been replaced with the Japanese
translation of msgid string.
MO Files
PO files are processed to produce a MO file. MO files are binary code and
are packaged with the software distributions
Modification of source code to enable i18n
Source code needs to be engineered for supporting locale switching at
runtime. Gettext software package (libraries and tools) helps in achieving
that.
