Labarge Inc.
Production Supervisor February 2007-August 2008
Continuous Improvement
Observes and directs operations and works closely with engineering manager
to determine best opportunities for improvement. Assisted in a time study
in March of 2007 on the 860 assembly with the lowest efficiency of 33% to
see where we could make our improvements. Did a line balancing on the
860 top and subassembly areas and achieved an efficiency of approximately
70% in the month of April 2007. I supervised 38 production employees, 5
mentors, and 2 material handler operators.
< Using the time study information and lessons learned from line balancing
the 860 I directed other production line team members responsible for
increasing our efficiencies to 100% by the end of January 2008. Since
January 2008 we have been operating at an average of over 115% efficient.
< Worked closely with the production manager, engineering department,
materials manager, and other production supervisors to provide the
Eclipse work area with a new layout.
< We used lean thinking and put the subassembly work cells next to the top
assembly work cells to open up communication between the two areas and
also give supervisors the advantage of seeing where the product is in the
build. This also gave the supervisor the ability to spot breakdowns in
the process more easily.
Quality Assurance
I worked closely with the quality supervisor to determine the best
practices for the Eclipse program. There was an existing practice in other
programs in the facility that used craftsman stamps for qualified workers
to check their own work.
< We encouraged the QE for Eclipse to prove in this process in Eclipse to
help reduce the waiting time on inspectors. This achieved better product
flow and reduced the manpower need for quality inspectors.
< Once we saw the craftsman stamp use on crimps become such a success it
led us to ask the QE to prove in this process on splices as well. This
is currently a work in process but should have the same positive affect.
Material Management
Our improvement team also worked closely with the materials manager to make
improvements in the material flow for eclipse. We used the demand and
capacity levels to determine the best way to kit material to the floor. We
introduced a two-bin Kanban system for the stock room and wire kitting, a
bulk material Kanban, and material handlers.
< These were key elements in having materials readily available to
production.
< Predetermining how to kit the material from the stockroom made it easier
on planning to make the right decisions.
< Before the wire kitting Kanban was introduced we were continuously
running out of wire because production didn't always know what they had.
The Kanban is a visual tool used by wire kitting to determine how to
schedule their day.
< Introducing the bulk material Kanban reduced the amount of paper work
need to keep up with scrap in Eclipse. Instead of filling out a defect
report every time production scrapped a contact we did a cycle count when
the parts run out once a month and if the scrap rate was high we would do
an investigation to determine solutions to the problem.
< The introduction of the material handlers took away non-value added work
from the production employees. This also provided material to the
fingertips of the operator so that we could increase our efficiencies.
