Develop a two step fermentation process coupled with membrane separations (UF, ED and EDI) to
produce bio- butanol
Description:
Bench-scale experiments of continuous fermentation coupled with cell recycle and products
separation to produce butyric acid
Development of separation methods to selectively remove butyric acid from reactor, mainly
focusing on ion exchange and electrodialysis
Simulations of batch fermentation, continuous fermentation, and continuous fermentation with
products separation by developing mathematic models and solving them with Matlab
Process simulation of two step fermentation and sequential separations (including ultrafiltration,
electrodialysis, pervaporation and distillation) to produce bio-butanol by integrating developing
modeling and commercial simulator
Supervising two undergraduate students on their research
