Process Improvement Engineer (Temp)
On a contractual assignment, responsible for improving the
night vision image intensifier (micro-channel plate)
production yield. Some notable improvement activities were:
- Process Improvement : Introduced a 60 mega-pixel machine
vision systems for in-line inspection of glass fibers for
defects such as fiber non-uniformity, fiber separation,
cracks, scratch, saw marks, etc. Previously done manually
using a 4x eye loupe.
- Root Cause Analysis: Introduced the use of pad
conditioning methods for reducing micro-scratches caused
by the optical polishing process and previously attributed
to operator function.
- Continuous Improvement: Customized an in-house, and cost-
effective, bench-top micrometer for the measurement of
plate diameter on a consistent and repeatable way with
data logging capability. Moreover, setup SPC charts
related to this measurement.
- DMAIC: Extensive DOE to optimize the chemical processing
(acid/base chemistry) in order to improve yield (hot
spots, glow, leakage). Input variables for the DOE were
chemical temperature, residence time, and acid/base
concentration.
- Gap Analysis: Prepared an extensive report for
presentation to upper management on gap analysis between
the Texas and Arizona sites for sharing and improving
product yield.
- Poka Yoke: Implemented On-the-Job training(OJT)
certification, training videos, engineering drawings, and
flow charts for the entire manufacturing area.
2005 - 2008 ST Microelectronics, Dallas, TX
Manufacturing Process Engineer
As a senior process engineer responsible for sustaining the
low pressure thin film deposition equipment used in IC
fabrication. Films deposited were silicon nitride, and tetra-
ethyl ortho silicates(teos) using low pressure chemical
deposition. In addition, extensive experience with coating
surfaces with polyimide films such as PMMA (poly methyl
methacrylate) and curing such films in vacuum ovens.
Excellent understanding of these polymeric films in terms of
material properties and application. Daily adjustments to
process variables, handling of out-of-control products,
process trouble shooting, mentoring junior engineers and
technicians, and training operators. Hands on experience with
DOE, SPC, FMEA, and documentation.
2003 - 2005 Photronics Inc, Allen, TX
Engineering Group Leader - Yield Enhancement and Defect
Reduction
Supervised two engineers and four technicians in charge of
plant scrap reduction activities. Moreover, also
responsible for investigating customer returns, failure
analysis, FMEA, 8D, and SCAR reporting.
Within a one year period, produced the highest product
yield ever attained at that site for a particular process
operation through detailed characterization and
improvements.
Carried out several failure analysis studies and 8D reports
on product returns. Failure analysis involved use of
detailed lab evaluations using FTIR, EDX, and SEM
techniques to understand process changes implemented by
customers that may have resulted in early failure.
Developed and implemented a comprehensive ESD control
strategy for the entire plant that ranged from monitoring
DI water resistivity to air ionization measurements.
2000 - 2003 Texas Instruments, Dallas, TX
Sr. Surface Coating Process Engineer (Chemical Vapor
Deposition)
Process development and sustaining of chemical vapor
deposition batch reactors used for the deposition of thin
films (coatings, etc). Some of the films deposited included
silicon
dioxide, silicon nitride, oxynitrides, polysilicon, tetra-
ethyl ortho silicates, etc. Involved in several major cost
reduction projects requiring process optimization and
reduction of chemical usage. Experience in failure analysis
with materials analysis methods such as SEM, TEM, TXRF,
EDAX, and Secondary Ion Mass Spectroscopy. Extensive use of
DOE.
1996 - 1999 Motorola, Austin, TX
Process Development Engineer
As a process engineer, developed several key coating
processes using photo-sensitive polymeric materials
containing diazo-naphtoquinones, tert-butyl phenols, bis-aryl
azide,
and so forth. These photo-sensitive films (resists) were
applied to surfaces of micron scale electronic components
for subsequent optical lithography. Extensive use of design
of experiments and statistical process control. hands on
experience with polymer and solvent delivery systems (pumps,
bulk filling, nozzles, etc).
