Research Interests

My main interests lie in molecular and microbiology and

understanding the molecular determinants of Ribulose-1,5-bisphosphate

carboxylase/oxygenase (RubisCO). An understanding of the structure-function

relationships of a protein requires precise knowledge of the role of the

residues (and regions) that are important for catalysis and stability of

the enzyme. Numerous mutational studies have been performed to investigate

the regions and amino acid residues that influence the catalytic properties

of RubisCO. I am using Synechococcus PCC6301, a cyanobacteria, to study

RubisCO. The promising approach for improving the efficiency of Rubisco is

to investigate residues and regions that are farther from the active site.

My research focuses on two site-directed mutants (A47P and A47G) made at

Alanine-47 in the large subunit of Synechococcus PCC6301 RubisCO. These

mutants are made near the large and small subunit interface in the C-

terminal area of the large subunit which is located far from the active

site.
