Undergraduate Research Project: Design and development of an ambulatory
blood pressure monitor. Efficiently tested and validated the algorithm for
calculating blood pressure using LabVIEW. Accuracy was found to be 3% of
the readings compared to standard monitors. Algorithm was then programmed
using Ride software to AT89C52 microcontroller to build a prototype.

. Graduate Research Assistant, Nanoworld and Smart Materials and Devices
Lab, UC January 2008 - Present
. Corrosion Monitoring and Control of biodegradable Magnesium Implant for
orthopedic applications
o Developed an in vitro experiment to monitor corrosion of implant
(plates, screws) using eddy current technique.
o Optimized the eddy current sensor probe to improve the sensitivity
using Vic-3d simulation software.
o Implemented cathodic prevention technique to control the corrosion of
the implant using LabVIEW.
. Smart hose development for failure prevention of hydraulic systems
o Successfully built a prototype of a clip-on sensor module using
piezoelectric sensors (PVDF film sensor) after testing other sensing
techniques like strain gages, ultrasonics, eddy current inspection and
impedance measurements.
o Used LabVIEW to acquire and store data from the clip-on sensor using NI
data acquisition module.
o Designed prognostic module in LabVIEW that interfaces with clip-on
sensor for damage detection of hydraulic hoses.
o Optimized piezoelectric sensor to improve the functionality of PVDF
sensor for higher temperature applications.
. Sensor skin for Surface Structural Health Monitoring
o Conceptualized and developed a novel sensing technique to detect damage
over large areas and performed material testing, implementation and
validation of concept; online monitoring using NI data acquisition
module.
o Developed a sensor skin prototype embedded to hydraulic hose with
capability to detect damage like pin holes, oil leak.
o Attached sensor skin to a composite fiberglass panel to detect any
surface damage in the structure.
. Carbon Nanotube (CNT) Yarn for Composite Leading Edge Self Monitoring and
Icing Detection
o Designed and developed an impedance based CNT yarn sensor using carbon
nanotubes threads spun from long CNT.
o Performed laboratory experiments to validate the concept of using CNT
yarn sensor to monitor health and to detect damage like micro-cracks
and delamination in a composite structure.
o New sensing technique to detect ice accretion on the surface of the
composite was pursued using CNT yarn sensor with data acquisition using
Solartron impedance analyzer.
. Continuous Sensor for Condition Monitoring of Machines and Structures
o Effectively implemented a sensor network to continuously monitor the
condition of a fiberglass plate with single channel data acquisition in
LabVIEW using strain gages and carbon nanotube (CNT) threads.
