CAREER SUMMARY
Senior Quality Assurance Engineer with demonstrated success in reducing
scrap costs, improving processes and implementing automated gauging.
Internal quality lead auditor in ISO 9001:2008 system. Excellent verbal,
written and computer skills. Self-motivated and innovative thinker who
consistently pursues "better ways". Experiences include:
Design of Experiments (DOE) ISO 9001
Geometric Dimensioning and Tolerance Employee Trainer
(GD&T) New Product Quality Planning
6-Sigma Green Belt SPC Development
CMM experience Production Operations Improvements
Minitab Quality Project Leader in FMEA,
Metrology RCA, DOE, SPC, KT
PROFESSIONAL EXPERIENCE
Kennametal inc., Orwell, Ohio 1991-2010
Producer of Carbide Machining Inserts - Highest production plant in world,
over 100K daily.
Senior Quality Assurance Engineer / Co-Management of QA Department 2008-
2010
Managed QA department. Developed and implemented programs to increase
quality. Co-supervised
11 employees.
. Reduced monthly scrap rate 50%, from $500K to $250K, with new QA
management team. Implemented corrective actions, "right the first
time" emphasis, daily scrap data communication and scrap reduction
projects.
. Developed all recent DOE's (Design of Experiments) that yielded
continuous decline in scrap costs and increase in productivity.
. Decreased scrap rate by 67%, from 30% to 10%, on new milling product
line through use of DOE. Now one of highest selling insert styles.
. Reduced scrap by $60K annually on high positive style inserts by
training setup personnel to use Optical CMM (Coordinate Measuring
Machine) and instituting setup and in-process inspections.
. Reduced number of procedures, triggered current-practice updates and
reduced audit findings by implementing monthly procedure review.
Senior Quality Assurance Engineer 1996-2008
Consulted on technical Quality matters. Managed ISO 9001:2008 internal
audits. Trained and conducted projects in FMEA, RCA, DOE, SPC and KT.
. Created $400K labor savings annually by initiating use of Optical
CMM's. Success of first machine, led to purchase of 3 additional
CMM's. Eliminated Manual inspections and inspection errors.
Improved inspection of dimensions and decreased GR&R's to acceptable
levels.
. Reduced insert cost by 75% on specific insert through 6-Sigma
projects, from $6 to $1.50 per insert. Controlled critical
dimension of end-to-end height variation by learning root cause
through DOE.
David Moran Page Two
Senior Quality Assurance Engineer - Continued 1996-2008
. Facilitated KT (Kepner-Tregoe) problem solving project that detected
root cause of repeated "mystery" failure of high-production coating
furnace. Furnace was up and running within 2 days of project and
continued without further interruption due to elimination of root
cause. Eventually led to improvement of gas delivery system to all
furnaces.
. Functioned as company expert in Optical CMM programming. Trained
personnel at Orwell plant and other Kennametal sites in CMM
programming and inspection.
. Developed CMM inspection strategies for drawing dimensions designed
for hard gauge inspection: tangency, W1W2 and TP dimensions.
Educated others in differences between optical and hard gauging.
Quality Assurance Engineer 1991-1996
Modernized quality systems from detection to prevention.
. Trained inspectors in SPC techniques, installed networked
statistical computer program, and trained inspectors to determine Cp
& Cpk from random samples. Inspectors then determined machine /
process capabilities and GR&R's.
. Qualified Orwell plant for Pratt and Whitney's "Certified Supplier"
by statistically demonstrating machine and gauge capabilities;
eliminating customer in-coming inspections and reducing in-house
inspections to random samples.
. Created numerous Access databases for quality information:
Corrective Actions, Inspection results, Dock Audits, Customer
Certifications and Internal Audit findings.
. Initiated Quality Management System improvements leading to
successful ISO9000:1994 certification.
. Received Manager Award for instituting paperless ISO document
control system with Access. Database controlled 1500 procedures
along with secondary distributions.
