Vice President/Controller
Knowledge Learning Corporation (KLC) generates $2 billion in revenue from
2,000 day care centers, 1,550 education programs and on-line learning
solutions. KLC is the largest for-profit provider of early childhood care
and education services.
Responsibilities included all accounting functions (General Accounting,
Payroll, Accounts Payable, Accounts Receivable and Fixed Assets), External
Reporting, Treasury and the Federal Subsidy Programs. Position reported to
the Executive Vice President/CFO while providing direction for these
departments and approximately 200 employees.
V Led critical change management effort with all members of organization to
institute a culture of owning and delivering financial and operational
targets.
V Coordinated and conducted quarterly audit and disclosure committee
meetings.
V Organized and participated on the quarterly earnings call and served as
key investor relations contact.
V Created capital procurement ($90 million annual expenditure) procedures
and implemented a monitoring process that included a capital approval

City (100 stores/$1 billion revenue). Activities included vendor
settlements, account analysis to develop purchase price adjustments,

V Appointed accounting transition team leader for the JCPenney/Eckerd
merger. Successfully consolidated three diverse drugstore companies'

distribution centers with Eckerd operations).

Corporate Director of Internal Control and Analysis (1990 - 1996)
V Developed a gross profit opportunity model through linear regression,
which increased the profitability of 200 retail outlets by $7 million in
one year. This was the first analysis of this type to provide decision
making vs. historical information to the merchandising managers.
V Reduced inventory shortage by $20 million (20%) in 3 years through
training, awareness, systems support and audits.
V Developed systems, internal controls, and audits that produced the
following reductions in 2 years: voids - $20 million (15%), refunds - $10
million (50%) and cash shortages - $600,000 (50%).
V Managed the Electronic Article Surveillance Program (815 EAS Systems),

tag expense. Implemented EAS tag application in the distribution

implementation of chain-wide EAS.
