Geologist, Brigham Exploration, Austin, Texas
January, 2005 - Present
Part of a team of geologists, geophysicists, land managers and petroleum
engineers that evaluates and develops economical drillable prospects in the
Rocky Mountains, Anadarko Basin and Texas Gulf Coast. Analyze oil and gas
well logs and use data for subsurface mapping and the identification of
geologic formations. Prepare and present various interpretive maps and
cross-sections, and reports of geological data. Steering horizontal wells
in the Bakken Formation of the Williston Basin. Monitoring conventional
wells in the Williston and Anadarko Basins.
. Create subsurface maps using well logs. Compare and combine maps to
look for structural and stratigraphic traps. Identifying depositional
environments of regions of interest (i.e. as a shoreline environment,
deep marine environment, channel system.)
. Calculate hydrocarbon reserves using Boones' spreadsheets to assist
reservoir engineers in analyses.
. Conducted field studies in Montana / Williston Basin, Wyoming / North
Powder Basin, Texas Panhandle and Oklahoma / Anadarko Basin, Texas
Gulf Coast.
. Continuously read, research and observe to gain new knowledge and keep
current with new technologies and discoveries.
. Ability to look at projects from different viewpoints. Working with
geophysicist in evaluation of seismic data for identifying hydrocarbon
reservoirs.
. Known as subject matter expert for use of PETRA geological software
used to enhance geological evaluation and data management. "Go to"
person for software issues.
. Experienced in Beta testing of new geological and graphics software.
Geological Technician, Brigham Exploration, Austin, Texas
October, 2002 - December, 2004
Obtained well logs and other well data from state and local geological/oil
& gas library and well log services. Compiled well history and production
data from various internet-based databases, such as IHS Energy and
drillinginfo.com. Set up and imported well and production data into PETRA
and taught the application to geologists and geotechs. Worked with
librarian to maintain well log files.
. Digitized well log curves for use in geological and seismic projects.
Imported LAS files of digitized curves into the project databases.
. Digitized isopach maps and structure maps for geologists' use in
calculating drainage areas and reserves.
. Copied and scanned well logs, maps, other documentation for import
into various software programs.
. Calibrated and imported raster images of well logs for use in PETRA
projects.
Technical Staff Assistant, The University of Texas at Austin, Dept. of
Geological Sciences, Austin, Texas
October, 2001 - August, 2002
Performed laser ablation ICP/MS techniques for rare earth elemental
analyses in metamorphic rocks, with an end toward substantiating the
equilibration of minerals under particular pressure-temperature conditions.
Obtained elemental compositional analyses on the electron microprobe to
gain information on the diagenetic characteristics of sandstones, and
backscattered-electron imaging of the sandstones for textural analyses.
Projects involved Computed Tomography (CT) data from earth materials.
Evaluated geological modeling software used in CT analyses.
Software Tester, Landmark Graphics Co., Austin, Texas
July, 2000 - September, 2001
Tested geological software applications within an integrated array of UNIX-
and PC-based software products for a geological and engineering software
solutions company. Performed testing through integrated workflows and
exploratory testing methods during all stages of the software development
life cycle. Upgraded previously designed workflows and assisted in training
of other software testers. Worked closely with developers, product
managers, product architects, and technical writers to ensure product
requirements were met, to determine effective implementations and
usability, and to ensure the production and release of quality software
solutions. Conducted both "white box" and "black box" testing. Tested and
edited work flows and user manuals.
Geoscience Intern, Texaco Exploration and Production, Technology
Development, Houston, Texas
Summer 1998
Studied the petrology of the Norphlet Sandstone, offshore Mobile, AL;
conducted petrographic and petrologic analyses; researched and reviewed
related literature.
Teaching Assistant, The University of Texas at Austin, Dept. of Geological
Sciences, Austin, Texas
Academic School Years, 1996 - 2000
Taught the use of electron-microprobe analysis, scanning electron
microscopy (SEM) and X-ray diffraction for microanalyses of rocks and
minerals (compositional, textural, topographical and structural
information); introductory field methods course for earth science education
majors; Introduction to Geology; Igneous and Metamorphic Petrology; and
Gems and Gem Minerals.
Geoscience Intern, Texaco Exploration and Production, Inc., New Orleans,
Louisiana
February - August, 1996; Summer, 1997
Worked within offshore Asset Management Team. Mapped and interpreted
projects with integrated interpretation of well log information and 2D
seismic data for offshore Louisiana Gulf Coast area. Created structural
maps and generated cross-sections utilizing Landmark Graphics software
applications. Performed petrographic analyses of sandstones, obtained
photomicrographs and SEM photographs, prepared well core samples for X-ray
analysis, performed X-ray diffraction analyses for mineralogical
identification.
