Freescale Semiconductor (Motorola spin-off), Microcontroller (MCU) Division
2004 - 2009
New Product Development Team Leader
. Managed teams of engineers, owning as many as seven simultaneous product
development projects from concept to production in 0.09 to 0.25 micron
transistor technology.
. Completed the certification, test program development, product
introduction and production ramp of nine distinct computer chips that
generated >50 individual new products.
. Performed initial product cost estimates for full manufacturing process,
including all manufacturing options. Maintained on-going costs analysis
through launch and full production.
.
Motorola, Inc. (Industry-leading micro technology developer and
manufacturer) 1990 - 2004
Project Manager, Semiconductor Products 2000-2004
. Managed new product engineering teams for 32-bit MCU, working on
simultaneous projects in 0.25 to 0.8 micron transistor technology.
New Product Introduction and Productivity Product Manager 1998-2000
. Managed engineering teams on 8-bit MCU new products, productivity
enhancement, and process transfer. Performed all characterization,
certification, and production launch, working closely with Design and
Wafer Fabrication departments to optimize processes and designs, in 0.8
to 1.5 micron transistor technology.
Process Transfer Manager and Product Engineering Manager 1990 -1998
. 8-bit Microcontroller Division: Collaborated extensively with
facilitization and factory engineers in multi-site expansions. Organized
factory startups: equipment selection and matching, first wafer
manufacture, debug, analysis, certification, and production launches.
. Managed various teams of engineers in new product introduction (NPI),
process and yield improvement,
SELECTED ACCOMPLISHMENTS
Developed wafer masking scheme which saved 40% of mask set cost
. Developed scheme to include multiple mask layers on reticles.
. Worked with wafer process engineering to develop a production worthy
methodology
Developed a wire bonding process moving Freescale products ahead of
competition by:
. Recognizing the confluence of advanced wire bonding and patented circuit
layout techniques to allow an additional>10% significant shrink of the
chip.
. Conceived and implemented a 32-bit MCU in a 144-pin package with full
Ethernet implementation, a process replicated in subsequent products but
not available from competitors.
. This design technique also improved power distribution to the chip and
overcame a technology-wall encountered with technologies below 0.25u.
Also reduced power pins by 20%, now usable for signals.
. Knowledge of the design, characterization, transistor physics, as well as
mechanical and material sciences were utilized in developing and
implementing this process.
Devised and implemented an aggressive and systematic test cost reduction
methodology:
. Reduced test time and cost by 75% and improved test yield.
. Maintained superior quality levels.
Spearheaded factory expansion into two new production facilities for
Motorola, increasing productivity:
. Launching two new wafer factories, taking full project ownership from
product division perspective.
. Working closely with facilitization and process engineers, transferring
wafer processes.
. Developed benchmarking methodology for analysis, debug, and process
qualification in new factories.
. Launched full production in both factories on schedule.
Built loyal teams, maintaining employee retention over 90% at Motorola and
Freescale by:
. Instilling team and company loyalty.
. Mentored high-potential employees in new product processes and company
policy by:
. Incoming employees were facing challenges learning essential technical
and interpersonal processes, complicated by tight deadlines on a high-
visibility product introduction.
. Conducting training to report technical difficulties without fear of
reprisal.
. Delivering on-time new product qualification and production through
cohesive team participation and cooperation.
. Also managed problem employees, improving performance and attitude.
.
PREVIOUS EXPERIENCE
Design/Production/Characterization Team Leader and Engineer.
. Key contributor to NPI team that introduced 50 new advanced CMOS logic
chips in less than 2 years
. This team was awarded a Motorola corporate gold medal for NPI execution
and yield enhancement.
. Coordinated aggressive cost reduction of older technology products.
Result was ~40% cost savings per units, coupled with improved chip
performance.
. Performed extensive product characterization, certifying and implementing
the measurement techniques utilizing both automated test equipment (ATE)
and bench equipment.
EDUCATION
Stevens Institute of Technology. Hoboken, New Jersey. 1977-1981
Bachelor of Engineering (BE), Electrical Engineering
Some MBA work completed.
Trained for PMP certification.
Presently taking classes related to writing and counseling.
