Summary
Senior Environmental Engineer and licensed Professional Engineer (PE),
skilled at developing and implementing feasible environmental solutions for
industry. Experience includes project management, operations support and
environmental compliance programs, working for both industry and
environmental consulting firms. Skilled at leading teams to implement
production changes which result in environmental improvement. Highlights:
. Implemented novel wastewater treatment technology to accommodate a 20%
production expansion
. Led pollution prevention team to achieve 40% reduction in total
dissolved solids in wastewater
. Facilitated 50% improvements in wastewater aeration efficiency,
increasing treatment capacity
Experience
Senior Environmental Engineer 2001-2010
Novozymes North America, Franklinton, North Carolina
Moving Bed Bioreactor Design and Installation: Designed and supervised
construction of a Moving Bed Bioreactor (MBBR), which was built by
converting an existing mechanical aeration basin. Project achieved greater
than 90% removal of soluble COD. Led project on budget from concept,
through design, permitting, procurement and installation in less than nine
months, in time for a 20% production capacity expansion.
Decanter-Centrifuge Installation: Managed project for installation of
decanter centrifuge. Work included facility design and layout, equipment
selection and procurement, managing and supervising contractors, and
writing permit modifications. Started system within a few months of final
permit approvals, producing biomass cake at planned capacity, and on
budget. Facilitated transfer of operations to production team.
Process Wastewater Aeration Improvements: Led investigation into process
wastewater aeration which resulted in 50% improvement in oxygen transfer
efficiency. Developed calculations to assess oxygen transfer efficiency
and aeration capacity. Facilitated oxygen transfer testing to determine
diffuser with lowest fouling potential and best performance. Identified
and developed cleaning procedures for diffusers.
Reduction of Total Dissolved Solids (TDS) in Wastewater Effluent: Led
cross-functional team to reduce TDS from 2500 to less than 1500 mg/L in
wastewater effluent through changes in production processes. Evaluated
impact of proposed production changes to allow team to focus on
opportunities with biggest impacts. Developed Excel spreadsheet model to
predict effluent TDS based on changes in production schedule and product
recipes.
Reverse Osmosis Investigation: Investigated Reverse Osmosis (RO) as
potential technology to further reduce TDS in wastewater effluent. Led
reverse osmosis experiments, scaling experimental results to full-scale
conceptual design. Developed cost model for implementation of technology.
Managed consultants investigating reverse osmosis and other options for
wastewater disposal.
Phosphorous Reduction Investigation: Conducted bench scale trials to
precipitate phosphorous from wastewater, using ferric chloride. Used bench
scale data to develop conceptual design and cost estimate for a full-scale
phosphorous precipitation installation to reduce phosphorous from 100 to 10
mg/L. Investigated reducing sources from production as alternate means for
phosphorous reduction.
Aquatic Toxicity Investigation: Conducted series of aquatic toxicity
studies to determine effect of a combined wastewater discharge with plant
process wastewater and municipal wastewater. Identified maximum amounts
which could be discharged without toxicity effects under the current
permitting structure.
Identification and Correction of Filamentous Bacteria: Identified growth
of filamentous bacteria as key issue related to poor settling in secondary
clarifier. Identified expertise within the company to help identify
predominant filaments and implement chlorination to control growth.
Addressed low food-to-mass ratio, the underlying cause for filamentous
growth. Implemented routine microexam procedures.
Wastewater Irrigation Modeling: Modeled wastewater irrigation system which
includes over seven miles of irrigation pipeline, over 900 acres of
irrigation fields and three different irrigation technologies, using Pipe-
Flo software. Recommended improvements to achieve higher annual irrigation
rates.
Recovery Process Engineer 1999-2001
Novozymes North America, Franklinton, North Carolina
Led team in development of conceptual design of customized product blending
system. Interfaced with engineers to ensure finished system met
requirements. Led project start-up, including process validation efforts.
Provided day-to-day support of production processes. Improved safety by
changing polymer make-up system. Investigated material corrosion issues.
Trained operators in recovery technology.
Research Engineer 1996-1999
Energy BioSystems Corporation, The Woodlands, Texas
Conducted research and engineering for a start-up company developing
biotechnology for desulfurization in petroleum refineries. Planned and
conducted experiments, related to reactor design, separations, and product
recovery. Designed and implemented an aqueous by-product recovery scheme at
the pilot plant scale, utilizing ultrafiltration and ion exchange.
Transferred technology from the laboratory to the pilot plant. Trained
pilot plant personnel to operate process. Conducted process simulations of
industrial scale biodesulfurization processes, using SuperPro Designer
software, which allowed technical and economic evaluation of the full scale
process. Wrote invention disclosures for potential patent applications.
Environmental Specialist 1993-1996
RMT/Jones & Neuse, Austin and Houston, Texas
Served as main client interface with several clients. Managed projects
involving environmental site assessments and hazardous waste permit
applications. Developed treatability studies and work-plans for
bioremediation of contaminated soils and sludge. Developed and evaluated
remediation alternatives for soil and groundwater contaminated with
inorganic and/or organic constituents. Evaluated the design and operation
of industrial wastewater treatment plants for organic and inorganic
contaminants. Prepared RCRA closure plans and corrective measures studies.
Conducted environmental compliance audits for hazardous waste, solid
waste, wastewater and stormwater compliance. Assisted industrial
facilities with development of Spill Prevention, Control and
Countermeasures (SPCC) plans, and Stormwater Pollution Prevention Plans
(SWP3). Worked extended assignment for an oil refinery in Texas City,
Texas. Assisted with Process Safety Management (PSM) tasks, including
hazardous operations (HAZOP) analyses and compliance audits.
