WORKSHOPS AND SEMINARS

Anger Management

Description: This workshop explores anger and adolescent development.

Participants learn: (1) how to search for the origin of anger; (2) effects

of anger on the emotional self; (3) effects of anger on the physiological

and biological self; (4) how anger impacts decisions; (5) how unmanaged

anger produces negative consequences; (5) techniques for focusing and

diffusing anger.

Behavioral Assessment and Management

Description: This workshop will instruct parents and child welfare workers

how to assess behavior by analyzing: (1) the problem behavior; (2) the

history of the problem; (3) the antecedent; (4) the consequence; (5) the

meaning; (6) and the ecology. Secondly, the presenter will discuss

managing behavior by (1) stimulus control; (2) stimulus satiation; (3) and

stimulus change.

Children and Substance Abuse

Description: In this workshop one will learn: (1) what child/youth

substance abuse is; (2) what causes child/youth substance abuse, (3) how

child/youth substance abuse is expressed; (4) and what can be done with

children/youth who are involved in drugs. Additionally, the following

issues will be address: experimentation, peer pressure, negative emotions,

environment, the addictive personality, and genetics.

Cultural Diversity and Gender Differences

Description: This workshop is designed to explore the reasons for gender,

ethnic and cultural intolerance. Participants will be exposed to

explanations of the following terms: "culture," "race," "diversity,"

"inclusion," "intolerance," "prejudice," "discrimination," "racism,"

"stereotype," "sexism," "sexual harassment," and will be challenged to

confront their own biases.

Developing Rapport with Foster Children

Description: This workshop will underscore the necessity of (1)

understanding how behaviors demonstrate feelings or emotional needs; (2)

communicating effectively with a child who is expressing angry and sad

emotions; (3) demonstrating "active listening;" (4) discovering the child's

"love language;" (5) building positive partnerships through trust,

openness, respect, realization and interdependence.

Entrepreneur/Financial Training

Description: This workshop is designed to positively impact participant's

self-confidence. Participants will learn: (1) importance of effective

presentation and communication in business; (2) value of good judgment and

decision-making strategies; (3) key business and financial terms; (4) four

ways of legally earning income; (5) how to eliminate debt; (6) how to

secure identity against theft; (7) how to improve FICO scores; (8)

significance of personal responsibility, follow-through, leadership,

followership, punctuality, teamwork, brainstorming, goal-setting, and

visioning; (9) how to liquidate debt, balance a checkbook, set a budget,

save and invest.

Essentials of Customer Service

Description: This workshop is designed to help participants gain an

awareness of and acumen for customer-friendly practices and policies.

Participants will learn: (1) importance of knowing and analyzing the target

market; (2) four basic needs of customers; (3) types of customer service;

(4) importance of customer service goals; (5) customer service language;

(6) how to handle problems and complaints; (7) listening.

Handling Stress in Foster Care

Description: Identifying stressors in foster care such as: (1) the child's

emotional, psycho-social, and behavioral issues; (2) issues related to the

child's family of origin; (3) issues related to the school, court, social

worker, foster family agency and the government. Participants will learn

how to find practical solutions and creative methods for handling the above

stressors in a constructive manner.

Music and Hip-Hop Culture

Description: This workshop explores the history and development of

Hip-Hop Music and Culture. Participants will learn: (1) how Hip-Hop

originated; (2) how Hip-Hop has evolved; (3) value system that informs Hip-

Hop; (4) how Hip-Hop values influence popular culture; (5) how to integrate

and filter the best and worse of Hip-Hop.

Separation and Loss Issues

Description: The presenter will discuss "the separation/loss/grieving

process," "the stages of development," "the positive interaction cycle,"

"and the cycle of attachment." This survey will help to determine the

impact of a child's loss and separation from one set of parents and/or

multiple sets of foster parents, and to determine that impact on both the

child's feelings and behaviors. Identify ways foster parents and child

welfare workers can turn losses into gains and assist in developing

partnerships among all the child's parents (birth, foster and adoptive) and

child welfare workers to foster positive future attachments.

Teen and Gang Violence

Description: This workshop will explore the ever-evolving culture of family

of origin influence, gang affiliation, e.g., dress, tattoos, jewelry,

language, friends, attitude, school attendance, violence, drugs, and

commerce. Descriptions of stages for gang involvement, at-risk behaviors

and profiles will be examined. Lastly, solutions for deterring children

from gangs will be offered.

Toward Black Manhood

Description: This workshop explores the essence of what African American

manhood involves. Participants will: (1) explore the myths; (2) address

many negative realities, i.e., high dropout rates, HIV/AIDS, violence, poor

health, gangs, involvement with penal system, joblessness,

premature/absentee fatherhood; (3) learn how to challenge popular

portrayals; (4) be challenged to embrace values that lead to productivity

and success.

Understanding Your Child's Temperament

Description: Examining the four basic temperaments using Peter

Blitchington, Ph.D. and Robert J. Cruise, Ph.D. "Understanding Your

Temperament." The presenter will demonstrate how a child's temperament

influences his/her emotional characteristics, relationship to others,

work/other activities, and needs. It will also be discovered how a parent

can reinforce temperament strengths and improve temperament growth areas.

Wellness as a Way of Life

Description: This workshop will demonstrate the importance of health,

wellness and disease prevention. Participants will learn: (1) that

inactivity, poor nutrition/hydration, and stress, etc. lead to many of the

more prominent diseases, i.e., hypertension, obesity, heart disease, and

diabetes; (2) value of fresh foods, minerals and vitamins; (3) importance

of eating balanced meals; (4) techniques of physical exercise.
