Goodwill Columbus
Columbus, OH 43212
August 27, 2010
To Whom It May Concern:
I am interested in the "Employment Services Specialist" position for
Goodwill Industries in Columbus, Ohio. To begin with, I possess
approximately four years of experience as the Executive Director of a multi-
cultural, non-profit, community based human services/social services agency
(a United Way agency) called PATH that serves low-income and homeless
individuals, predominantly possessing mental and physical disabilities,
substance abuse issues, previous incarceration and whom have barriers to
employment - giving them the tools necessary to lead an independent, self-
sufficient life, working in partnership with the local State Employment,
Workforce Development agency. PATH is funded by Federal, State, County and
City governmental grants as well as non-profit, private foundational, and
corporate grants, in addition to individual donors, and also operates a
community dining facility that feeds over 130 homeless and disadvantaged
individuals per day at no personal cost. During my tenure, I took over a
bare-bones organization, successfully taking it to the next level by adding
vital programs and services (on-site GED classes, computer resource room,
cover letter and resume support, counseling, budgeting classes, job
placement) that support PATH's mission, doubling the client base and the
success of individuals served.
In addition, I also possess over nine years combined experience as a
Recreation Therapist and Director of Therapeutic Recreation in the health
and human services and rehab field, for individuals who are
developmentally, mentally or physically disabled, - creating, implementing,
and supervising therapeutic recreational, educational and leisure programs
and staff in an interdisciplinary care environment in order promote
independence, quality of life and person-centered thinking.
As the Executive Director of PATH, I have been responsible for all of the
day-to-day operations, staff and volunteer recruitment/training/supervision
and evaluation, strategic
planning, writing new policies and procedures, developing and tracking
programs, quality assurance, financial accountability and budget
development, grant writing and compliance, conducting workshops, data and
statistical collection and reporting, compliance with state and federal
codes and regulations, memberships on various governmental and non-profit
committees serving the underserved, board

recruitment and development, creation and development of service programs,
monthly reports for board, adhering to PATH's mission and communicating it
to all sectors of the
community, donor cultivation, monthly newsletter, fundraising, case
management services, conflict resolution, crisis intervention, cultivating
and maintaining collaborative partnerships with the local community's
business, educational, governmental, media and non-profit entities, public
speaking, team building, implementing HIPPA guidelines, and human resources
compliance.
I also possess one year of experience as a volunteer with the Workforce
Development/State Employment agency in this area as a Vocational Consultant
and Resource Room teacher - assisting individuals who are unemployed,
dislocated workers, WIA recipients, or homeless - teaching computer
literacy, job searching tools, and resume development.
In addition to this experience, I also worked as a Lead Teacher/Program
Director in an after-school setting for at-risk, economically disadvantaged
high school students, developing and upgrading academic programs in order
to provide students with the maximum skills in order to succeed in
vocational paths or post-secondary education.
Prior to this position, I worked as the Public Health Educator for the
state of New Mexico, San Juan County, a highly visible governmental
position that involved research and relationship building. I planned,
organized, and developed health education programs in order to meet
community needs; collected data and performed research to assist with
evaluating health related education techniques, and helped create brochures
and flyers to
advertise upcoming programs to the community. Worked in conjunction with
WIC
(Women, Infants and Children), and Maternal Child Health. In addition, I
also participated in creating the strategic plan for the Department of
Health, New Mexico and was a founding member of the Tobacco Coalition
(working extensively with the San Juan County partnership), volunteer for
the Citizen's Review Board - Children, Youth and Families (assisting
children in the foster care system), and helped to attain grant funding to
create the first Adult Day center in San Juan County.
I possess a BA in Education and Fine Arts, and thirty-two graduate credits
in both Social Work and Media and Communications in addition to several
teaching licenses in NM, NY and NYC. My plan is to continue my education
this fall with graduate courses in Special Education.
Seeing myself as possessing excellent oral and written communication
skills, a collaborative, partnering leadership style, and being a team
player, I am thoroughly committed to serving the special needs population
in a culturally diverse environment. My hands-on and supervisory
professional experience from a continuous career in human services serving
the underserved has been key in helping them reach their goals by providing
the best possible opportunities and support, enabling them to develop their
potential and succeed without any limitations.
