EXPERIENCE
PACIFIC CREST TRANSFORMERS, Medford, OR
2010 - Current
( Leader in the design and construction of specialized liquid filled
distribution transformers)
Electrical Design Engineer
Hired to design custom oil filled distribution transformers including
providing engineering support to manufacturing, test, sales, and quality
departments from design to final shipment. Responsible for reviewing and
signing off control drawings, wiring diagrams, nameplate diagrams,
certified test reports, and mechanical drawings throughout the
electrical/mechanical design and manufacturing processes.
. Types of transformers designed include padmount, substation, station,
dual voltage, grounding, rectifier, isolation, CKT 31, mining duty,
over voltage, K-factor, and other specialized transformers. Core and
winding designs include round/stacked, rectangular/stacked, and
rectangular/wound
. Responsibilities include solving complex engineering problems,
performing harmonic analysis (K-Factor), coordination studies, fault
analysis, load condition analysis, root cause failure analysis and
many other engineering tasks as necessary.
. Performed Research and Development on insulation breakdown with over
200 samples to develop a leaner manufacturing process by reducing
excess use of insulation paper. Biggest achievements was in reducing
tap lead insulation which reduced radial build in turn reduced
deviations between leakage reactance design calculations and test
results.
. Completed 100's of electrical designs for a Department of Energy
(DOE) standard efficiency matrix from 150KV to 15MVA to support sales
engineering quotation software and also reducing design time for
engineering group.
Sales Engineer (Account manager for Eaton Electrical/Cutler Hammer)
Engaged in highly technical sales and applications engineering including
design feasibility, contract/specification reviews, preparation of bids
cost, price quotes, product delivery schedules, and customer engineering
support.
NOTE: I have been performing as a design engineer 80% of the time with 20%
in sales engineering.
EATON ELECTRICAL CORPORATION, Houston, TX
2008 - 2009
($15.4B power management global technology leader in electrical components
& systems of power quality, distribution & control).
Senior Electrical Engineer, Service
Hired to supervise/mentor 20 + field engineers on engineering projects such
as plant shutdowns, startups, preventative maintenance. Provided guidance
on power transmission/ distribution/generation equipment & systems such as
switchgear, breakers, MCC's, transformers, reactors, UPS's, fusing,
arrestors etc.
. Coordinated and managed field engineering projects.
. Provided engineering support on equipment installations, commissioning
testing, failure investigations, and engineering changes on power
distribution equipment.
. Provided guidance to customers on transformer purchasing,
remanufacturing, and system applications.
. Developed & presented 3 training modules on power transformer
theory/testing/analysis.
. Led effort to standardize previously nonexistent testing & analysis
procedures on power transformers. These were rolled out corporate-
wide via online & traditional venues.
ABB TRANSFORMER REMANUFACTURING & ENGINEERING SOLUTIONS
(TRES) 2005 -
2008
($30B global leader in power & automation technologies serving markets in
100+ countries).
Transformer Test engineering & Manufacturing Specialist
Hired to supervise/mentor field engineers on failure & predictive
diagnostics and commissioning testing & installation of 100MVA & greater
power transformers for global customers in the power generation,
transmission & distribution sectors. Performed in depth practical research
on core magnetization related to residual magnetism and its influence on AC
testing. Provided technical guidance to customers and tailored contract
requirements to meet company's optimum engineering & technical
capabilities.
. Diagnosed insulating & mechanical integrity using dielectric & sweep
frequency response analysis (transfer function analysis) for utility &
industrial sectors, improving system reliability, preventing numerous
catastrophic failures.
. Authored an advanced diagnostics manual to support field engineers on
how to analyze the transfer function response of a power transformers
RLC network. (known as SFRA analysis)
. Researched & Developed design specifications & test procedures for a
demagnetizing prototype to degauss transformers prior to AC testing.
Test set & procedures were adopted as best practice and disseminated
throughout field & manufacturing environments.
. Simulated insulation breakdowns and winding deformations commonly
found in power transformers prior to failures in a lab environment for
the ABB R&D division.
. Authored advanced engineering reports related to findings through
predictive diagnostics.
MEMC ELECTRONIC MATERIALS, St. Peters, MO 2004 -
2005
