Dear Esteemed Professional:
As an elementary school teacher I have many skills that are applicable to
other positions in the workforce. I would be an asset in any office
environment and I am eager to offer my assistance and feel like part of the
team. While I am looking for a "temporary" assignment, I can not
immediately define that term. For at least a year, I am looking for a full
time position. Should the education crisis continue, one year could easily
become two or three. Once I have found a home in my employment, I may
find that I would prefer to stay, particularly with a position where I may
assist in the training of new employees or other such assignments that
would put my teaching skills to use. I do not want to close my mind and
therefore close a door that might otherwise lead to a very satisfying
career.
In my youth, I held many jobs that pre-date the one-page nature of a
resume, from "counter girl" at a drycleaner to assistant manager at a magic
store. I also worked in entertainment for many years, from playing
characters at children's parties to plays, voice-overs and film work. I
worked in retail at Thrifty Drug and in an office as an administrative
assistant. I worked in call centers encouraging people to refinance their
homes or purchase a portrait plan. I held positions during school breaks,
never working for longer than a few months, which allowed me to in effect
take a tour of the working world. None of these positions are worthy of
note in and of themselves, but the various skills I have acquired along the
way are. Whatever environment a position may require, odds are I have
worked somewhere similar. I consider myself highly capable and adaptable
and I am eager to accept the next challenge life has to offer.
As everyone in California is aware, we are experiencing a crisis in our
education system. Teachers, holding a position in what was once seen as
one of the most stable careers available, are living school year to school
year, never certain if their job will be there by the next budget meeting.
Most districts are conserving money with hiring freezes, and displaced
teachers are offered transfers or preferred listings as substitutes as
compensation for their recently received pink slip. Those who did not have
a contract with a district at the time of the budget crisis are now unable
to find work, and those who were relying on substitute teaching positions
are finding that few if any assignments are available for those not on the
preferred lists. Like so many others, I come to you as a teacher displaced
by politics and finances, both concepts that do not belong in a classroom.
Rather than mourning the temporary loss of my classroom, I am here to
embrace the change, celebrating the opportunity to expand my horizons and
work with grown ups. While I won't need to be able to eat my lunch, grade
a stack of spelling tests and supervise detention simultaneously, I'm
certain that level of dedication and multitasking will be applicable
elsewhere.
Thank you for considering my application. I look forward to meeting you at
our interview.
Respectfully,
Kimberly A. Rogers
