WORK EXPERIENCE Batson Architects Inc. 1992
- 2010
Greenville, South
Carolina US
Principal
Design Principal/Senior Project Manager
Duties: As a working principal, I was lead designer
and involved in the day-to-day project coordination
of multiple institutional projects. I have worked
with design teams composed of multiple architects,
consulting engineers and specialists on projects
ranging in complexity from new institutional type
construction to complicated multi-phased renovation
projects at numerous Veterans Administration
Medical Center (VAMC) campuses and private
institutional centers in Georgia, North Carolina
and South Carolina. In addition, the projects have
ranged in scale from small office area renovations
to complex additions requiring multi-phased
construction while maintaining the day-to-day
operations of the existing facility. Complicated
renovations create unique challenges much different
than new construction endeavors. It takes the
concerted effort of the entire design team together
with the client staff to fully coordinate
department moves and phasing during the
construction process. Over the years, my
professional experience has enhanced my intuitive
approach to project delivery. I have implemented a
pro-active, pre-planning strategy with members of
the entire design team to create the foundation
required for well-executed projects. My management
skills and knowledge of the design process have
resulted in many diverse and successful projects
over the years.
Accomplishments: In my career, I have been involved
in over $298 million dollars of construction work.
Of that, over $185 million dollars has been
directly related to institutional design projects
at Batson Architects with approximately 70% new
construction, 25% renovation and 5% proposed or
future work. The raw construction cost equates to
approximately 1.35 million square feet of
healthcare related facilities or close to 30 acres
of new and renovated space.
Related Skills: Over my career, my management
skills and hands-on experience, in programming,
conceptualizing, design development and
construction administration, lends itself well to
the skill-sets required in the design of today's
complex building facilities.

Project Architect/Project Manager
Duties: I personally worked with and managed design
teams to program, design and develop construction
document drawings and specifications for a new
institutional facility and several major
institutional addition/renovation projects. At this
point in time, drawings were accomplished by hand
prior to the advent of computer design and required
focused design efforts from all engineering
disciplines to produce accurate construction
documents.
Accomplishments: During my tenure at the firm, I
was directly involved in approximately $64 million
dollars or approximately 460,000 square feet of
institutional related construction in Georgia,
North Carolina and South Carolina. Of that work,
73% was new construction, 21% renovation and 6%
proposed future construction. As the project
manager, I take great pride in maintaining
construction change orders to less than 2%
construction for new construction and less than 5%
for renovation work, something rarely accomplished
in complicated construction work.
Related Skills: As a member of the design team,
managing these complex projects required the
concerted effort of all the stakeholders,
architects, consulting engineers and building staff
to meet the program, budget and efficiencies
required in running a state of the art facility.

ADDITIONAL LEED (Leadership in Energy and Environmental
INFORMATION Design)
As principal-in-charge, I designed the first LEED
Silver Certified Monastery of St. Clare in the
United States. As a religious community embracing
the environment, the sisters wanted to leave as
small a carbon footprint as possible by following
the LEED (Leadership in Energy and Environmental
Design) process for green sustainable architecture.
Through this sustainable design approach, the
sisters chose the altar stone from an on-site
boulder. In addition, the building orientation
along with a geo-thermal water-source heat pump
system, energy recovery unit, high performance
double-pane low 'e' glass window system and
recycled materials where applicable complimented
their commitment to their present and future
communities. By following the environmentally
sensitive design approach, the monastery facility
attained the goal of true sustainable design.
I have also sought out opportunities beyond my
profession by being involved in the upstate
community of South Carolina, such as teaching at
Clemson's College of Architecture and acting as a
visiting design critic at the South Carolina
Governor's School for the Arts and Humanities,
because I find that such experiences compliment my
architectural practice and provide sources of
inspiration both personally and professionally.
