Projects

Research Project (3rd Year): Testing the potential physical interaction

between the novel transcription factor D-Ets6 and D-jun in Drosophila

melanogaster. The global aim of this project was to test whether D-Ets6

and D-Jun can physically interact.

Transforming D-jun (and D-Fos) into BL12 cells. Overexpression and

purification of D-jun, D-Fos and D-Ets6. Testing whether D-jun and D-Ets6

immunoprecipitate together. Analysed results, writing 7,000 words project

report.

Main techniques used in this project were plasmid miniprep, bacteria

transformation, polyacrylamide gel electrophoresis, western blot,

immunoprecipitation, protein purification and spectrophotometric

measurements.

Skills

Interpersonal skills: Collaborated with other scientists, outlining

objectives, methodology and conclusions, actively listening to people and

stimulating interest and discussion. Exchange constructive feedback and

support and learned delegating responsibility. Managed several

responsibilities and collaborations in parallel, planned work to achieve

goals and targets on time, set realistic objectives, developed creative

solutions to problems.

Technical Skills

Molecular Genetics (3rd Year): Gene analysis methods such as DNA

sequencing, site-directed mutagenesis and mutation detection using the

polymerase chain reaction (PCR).

Practical Techniques in Molecular Genetics (2nd year): Extraction and

quantification of total RNA, analysis of RNA using northern blotting,

Analysis of DNA polymorphisms, gel filtration chromatography to separate

proteins and other substances.
