Projects
Research Project (3rd Year): Testing the potential physical interaction
between the novel transcription factor D-Ets6 and D-jun in Drosophila
melanogaster. The global aim of this project was to test whether D-Ets6
and D-Jun can physically interact.
Transforming D-jun (and D-Fos) into BL12 cells. Overexpression and
purification of D-jun, D-Fos and D-Ets6. Testing whether D-jun and D-Ets6
immunoprecipitate together. Analysed results, writing 7,000 words project
report.
Main techniques used in this project were plasmid miniprep, bacteria
transformation, polyacrylamide gel electrophoresis, western blot,
immunoprecipitation, protein purification and spectrophotometric
measurements.
Skills
Interpersonal skills: Collaborated with other scientists, outlining
objectives, methodology and conclusions, actively listening to people and
stimulating interest and discussion. Exchange constructive feedback and
support and learned delegating responsibility. Managed several
responsibilities and collaborations in parallel, planned work to achieve
goals and targets on time, set realistic objectives, developed creative
solutions to problems.
Presentation skills
Molecular genetics (3rd Year): Power Point Presentation: "RNA interference
directs innate immunity against viruses in adult Drosophila". Poster
Presentation: "Forensic validation of the autosomal STR D10S1248 marker".
Molecular genetics (1st Year): Power Point Presentation: "Stem Cells".
Technical Skills
Molecular Genetics (3rd Year): Gene analysis methods such as DNA
sequencing, site-directed mutagenesis and mutation detection using the
polymerase chain reaction (PCR).
Practical Techniques in Molecular Genetics (2nd year): Extraction and
quantification of total RNA, analysis of RNA using northern blotting,
Analysis of DNA polymorphisms, gel filtration chromatography to separate
proteins and other substances.
